#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents a novel of redemption and suspense, as a woman haunted by the unsolved murder of her childhood friend returns to her small South Carolina hometown. . . .
Tory Bodeen grew up in a run-down house where her father ruled with an iron fist and a leather belt—and where her dreams and talents had no room to flourish. Her one escape was her neighbor Hope, who lived in the big house just a short skip away, and whose friendship allowed Tory to be something she wasn’t allowed to be at home: a child.
Then Hope was brutally murdered, and everything fell apart.
Now, as she returns to Progress with plans to settle in and open a stylish home-design shop, Tory is determined to find a measure of peace and free herself from the haunting visions of the past. As she forges a new bond with Cade Lavelle—Hope’s older brother and the heir to the family fortune—she isn’t sure whether the tragic loss they share will unite them or drive them apart. But she is willing to open her heart, just a little, and try.
But living so close to those unhappy memories will be more difficult and frightening than Tory could ever have expected. Because Hope’s murderer is nearby as well. . . .
“Roberts may have achieved her personal best in this tense Southern Gothic. As atmospheric and unsettling as a Tennessee Williams play. . . . This is romantic drama at its best.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"One of my favorite books now. Tori is a girl who grows up in South Carolina and her dad beats her all the time. She has a psychic gift that he swears is the devil and he will beat the devil out of her. One night she sees her best friend Hope being raped and murdered. They were supposed to meet up at 10:35pm and she couldn't go because of the beating she had received. The next morning she goes and tells Hope's parents about it. They were both eight years old and she never got over losing her one and only friend. So she grows up and moves back to Progress, falls in love with Hope's brother Cade and FINALLY discovers who killed Hope all those years ago. All through the book I thought it was Tory's dad but it wasn't. It shocked the crap out of me when it was revealed!"

— Kathleen, 1/29/2014" This is one of my favorite Nora Roberts books. Loved it! "
— Not, 1/24/2014" Maybe this is an unfair review? It's not that the book is as terrible as all that -- the mystery/thriller plot was kind of interesting, and the writing was decent, if veering off into the purple at times. But the romance plots were amazingly annoying, and confirmed for me that mainstream romance is just not my thing. The romantic lead came across as a total jerk, "winning" the heroine by tactics that are absolutely creepy. He follows her around, shows up uninvited, never takes no for an answer, and basically stalks her. And she likes it. Ugh. "
— Elena, 1/15/2014" I read Nora Roberts as a spring break "guilty pleasure." Love her characters and the story line was good- would have liked more "psychic" moments. All and all, an entertaining read. "
— Stacy, 1/9/2014" I liked this book a lot ;) super fun. Great romance, great creepy villains, great characters. "
— Haley, 12/25/2013" Tory Bodeen reenters her haunted childhood by returning to the small town where she grew up. A fun romance with a good mystery intertwined. I was disappointed with the ending, a bit anticlimatic. "

— Debra, 10/31/2013" Gonna find the lifetime movie based on this one! Loved that the two men were just "yeah I love you. Whatcha gonna do about it?" Hilarious! And the killer. Didn't see that one coming! One of her best yet! "

— Laurie, 10/12/2013" I'm generally not a reader of romance genre, but now and again I turn to this or mysteries for a mental holiday. My aversion to the genre is its predictability but I must say, Roberts knows how to turn a tale, develop characters and write good description. Her research of a theme is thorough. "
— Victoria, 10/5/2013" one of my favorite Nora Roberts books. "
— Romanceroni, 8/28/2013" The first time a read it, I couldn't sleep all night. So scary I thought it to be. I can't remember anymore why I thought it to be so "
— Eleonora, 8/5/2013" The writing is Roberts at her best, although there are some unusually unpleasant characters and scenes in this one. "
— Glenn, 7/13/2013" not a romance or Nora Roberts fan. But an ok book to read just before falling asleep. If you're looking for thought provoking lit, "this ain't it". "

— Audrey, 3/18/2013" Listened to it as an audio book. Not bad, but not my favorite Nora Roberts. "
— Janel, 3/2/2013" What has happened to Nora Roberts? Who is the impersonator who masquerades as her? The Nora I'm familiar with wrote stories with interesting characters that readers cared about until around 2005. 1 of 10 stars "
