With blowtorch and steel Clare Kimball has sculpted a personal vision that commands the attention of the New York art world. But success cannot burn away the vague, troubling memories, the half-remembered nightmares that have plagued Clare since childhood. These phantoms of the past have drawn her home to Maryland, to the small town where she grew up and where her father died in circumstances never really explained.

Emmitsboro is just as Clare remembered—the same familiar faces, the same chatty gossip passed over the counter at the local diner. Nothing much has changed—except Cameron Rafferty. Once the high school bad boy, he landed on the right side of the law and is now the town sheriff. The only clue to his wild, passionate nature is the light in his eyes when he looks at Clare. In Cam’s strong arms Clare is seduced into falling in love, and into believing her small-town world is safe.

But within the dark woods of Emmitsboro something evil spreads its poisonous power. Now the once-peaceful town is wrapped in a cloak of terror, hiding a teacherous heart. And now Clare must pay the price for digging up the secrets of the past and confront an evil that may be unstoppable—because those who practice it may be divine.

" Enjoyed the book. Liked the characters. I, however, will never rate a book a 5 star when the author thinks the story needs bad language. I have read enough Christian authors to know you can right a book of any genre' without implementing bad language. "

" I enjoyed this, many of her books are a combination of mystery and romance and this is no exception. This book delves into Satanic worship as a large part of the plot. "

" This was the first NR book I read and I enjoyed it- I was quite pleased with the twist at the end which somehow elevated the story - will definitely read another of hers "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Destin Cook | 2/1/2014

" This book was very dark, with a lot of devil worship, murder, rape, drugs, and kidnapping. It was able to hold my attention. My only complaint is that it was a bit drug out. The ending was a bit twisted as well. It is very different than the normal romance books that i read, but that is probably why I stayed interested "

" Cheesy but fun. Reminds of those wonderful old horror novels about rabid devil worship I used to get as a kid back in the 80's at the grocery store. Since it was written in '92 it kinda was at the tail end of the Satanic Panic...good times. "

" Even if you are pre-conditioned by the J. D. Robb "In Death" Series, this one is very dark. Of course, the title warns of this, but this one if not for the faint-of-heart. I lit candles while reading this one...and slept with the lights on. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Patricia Solla | 11/14/2013

" While I usually really like this author's writing, this book was just too creepy for my taste. There's plenty of action, suspense and romance and it's actually a believable storyline but as I stated before it's really creepy and a little to gory for me. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Tory | 11/9/2013

" This wasn't entirely typical romance. They didn't wait until the end to get it on, nor did it end with babies and marriage. And it was suitably creepy with the topic of Satanism... which also, not so typical romance. "

" Isn't Nora Roberts known for her romance novels? This is basically a romance story except she throws in a Satanic cult. Is she trying to get a new audience? This was okay to listen to but I would never have spent time reading it. "

" I wanted to enjoy this and I was really in the mood for the light-hearted entertainment Roberts excels at. Unfortunately, the plot required far too much suspension of disbelief and I never really felt the level of suspense the novel clearly aimed at. "
