His extraordinary debut, Those across the River, was hailed as "genre-bending Southern horror" (California Literary Review) and "graceful [and] horrific" (Patricia Briggs). Now Christopher Buehlman invites readers into an even darker age—one of temptation and corruption, of war in heaven and of hell on earth.
And Lucifer said, "Let us rise against Him now in all our numbers, and pull the walls of heaven down…"
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm—that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict.
Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon. There, she tells Thomas, she will fulfill her mission: to confront the evil that has devastated the earth and to restore to this betrayed, murderous knight the nobility and hope of salvation he long abandoned.
As hell unleashes its wrath, and as the true nature of the girl is revealed, Thomas will find himself on a macabre battleground of angels, demons, saints, and the risen dead—and in the midst of a desperate struggle for nothing less than the soul of man.

"This book was wonderful the first time and better the second. The prose is so lyrical it is addictive. Buehlman is an incredibly effective painter with words, and does not use this talent to get away with plot weakness in any way. The characters are rich, believable, and complex. The historical underpinnings to the story are thoroughly researched and authentic. And the plot...there is no slow start to this book. It grabs the reader's interest immediately, and effectively builds suspense while spinning beautiful, detailed character vignettes along the way. I cannot wait to read it a third time and see what details I uncover. Also, I found the ending to be PERFECT. So satisfying, yet not trite or glib. Seriously, read this absolutely fantastic book. It elevates the horror genre to something much more sublime."

“Cormac McCarthy’s The Road meets Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales in this frightful medieval epic…An author to watch, Buehlman is now two for two in delivering eerie, offbeat novels with admirable literary skill.”
— Kirkus Reviews“Having made a huge bloody splash with Those across the River, Buehlman returns with a book set in 1348 Europe…It’s intriguing that Buehlman has leapt so far from the mid-century Southern setting of his first novel, just as intriguing that he’s also an award-winning poet. Expect demand.”
— Library Journal" This was a lot of fun. I grabbed it on a whim from my library and it was a lot better than I thought. The story had more depth than I thought it would. I really enjoyed it. "
— Nikki, 1/4/2014" Loved it! The creatures are incredibly original and vividly described. You won't want to out this book down once you start reading! "
— Stephanie, 12/26/2013" Loved it! I found it interesting and creepy!! "
— Rae, 12/2/2013" Wordy, slow. Interesting concept. "
— Patrick, 11/27/2013" It would be horribly facile and reductive to describe this book as a Medieval version of King's The Stand. However, that is just what I'm going to do as I'm tired, headachey and not up to writing a review at the moment. Suffice to say I enjoyed this bit of epic horror. "
— Neil, 11/4/2013" A very well written, fast paced fantasy book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy and doesn't mind a little gore and violence. "
— Jack, 9/30/2013" A little bit Canterbury Tales, a little bit Paradise Lost. A lot good. I am having to draw a few conclusions about the ending that I'm not entirely sure are correct. I don't mind. I get annoyed when authors spell every little thing out. "
— Melinda, 7/15/2013" This has all my favorite things, historical, fantasy, horror all wrapped up in beautiful prose. Great book to end the year on. Or the world on, if the Mayans are right. "
— Sandie, 3/26/2013" Not sure how to categorize this one. A bit historical, a bit horror, medieval, Black Plague, Lovecraftian, Hell, Heaven, angels, fallen, good and evil. There it is. "
— Rose, 2/12/2013" Very good book that manages to mix mideval history with fantasy and religion. Well written with engaging characters, rather ordinary quest based plot that was constantly energized by the fantastic. "
— Paul, 12/31/2012" This is quite possibly the best book I've read in years for fun or entertainment (and not for my MA in Literature.) "
