"Such a good book filled with action on and off the baseball field! The #2nd book is called Rivals, and the #3rd book is called Best Of The Best!"
— Jake (5 out of 5 stars)
“This feel-good story manages an involving plot filled with strong, appealing characters who face danger and find support from responsible adults. Centered on the headline issue of steroids and crafted with short, fast-paced chapters, it is a great middle school choice for both boys and girls.”
— VOYA“Author and narrator Tim Green smacks one out of the park with his portrayal of Josh, a gifted middle school baseball player who is faced with painfully intense pressures that make him question the game that he was born to play. Listeners learn how adults can, through egotism, selfishness, and greed, skew a child’s fascination for a simple game. As narrator, Tim Green breathes life and depth into the characters of this story, leaving an indelible impression.”
— AudioFile“Green delivers a fast-paced story, told in short chapters that build to the exciting climax. He also doesn’t sanitize the rough world of the locker room, showing the intimidation that often accompanies young people’s sports.”
— Booklist“Issues of peer and family pressure are well handled, and the short, punchy chapters and crisp dialogue are likely to hold the attention of young baseball fans.”
— School Library Journal“Narration filled with crisp dialogue brings immediacy to Josh’s painful practice sessions, the excitement of his games, and his confusion at the flux of middle school dynamics.
— Kirkus Reviews" 3 1/2 stars. I've read all of Tim Green's football books, and I like them very much, so I thought I'd give one of the baseball books a try. I listened to this one. It was read by the author and the audio was pretty good. Full disclosure here--NOT a baseball fan. SO not a baseball fan. But I usually like baseball books. And I really liked this one for the most part. Didn't like Josh's father, but that's okay--I can live with the jerk dad. I really hit a wall with the steroids, though. I just couldn't wrap my head around why anyone would care so much why a travel team did well. I wouldn't even care if a professional team did well, but maybe I mentioned how much I don't like baseball... "
— Dolores, 2/19/2014" I enjoyed how Tim Green wrote this book, well done. "
— Sam, 1/13/2014" ok this really wasn't the worst book i have ever read, but it was bad. The charcters were cheezey, and the setting was just weird. i mean it was just all soo predictable, the olny reason i read it was because my mom gave it to me on easter for school. if i really had the choice i would have sropped after the first couple chapters. so yeah really cheezy book i gave it a D+ "
— Pizza, 1/8/2014" Great boy book!! Very interesting story! "
— Tamara, 1/4/2014" This book was OK. I did not appreciate that it is an ICCA book. Those books are for 3rd through 6th grade. I still think they need to change that because this book would be OK for a 6th grader to read, but not a 3rd grader! Josh (the main character) gets on a U14 travel team even though he's only 12. Towards the end of the book his teammates offer him gym candy (steroids). He is a smart kid and never takes them, but the way he handles the situation is stupid. He refuses to contact the police and puts himself and a girl friend into seriously dangerous situations. It is not a good example of what kids should do when they find themselves in the same situation. I don't appreciate this scenario being put out there for kids to read. The first thing he should have done was contact the police. End of story. Period. Don't waste your time with this book. "

— Terrie, 10/15/2013" I liked this because it wasn't JUST about baseball, so you could understand what was going on. I think the climax was kind of anti-climatic funnily enough. It could have been a little more excited, but I understand that this is made for kids. "
— Tori, 6/18/2013" Solid read but not exceptional and a little predictable... enjoyable 3 and a half stars... "
— Joshua, 4/5/2013" Read my review at Gator Book Chomp. "

— Alex, 9/28/2010" this book is very exciting! if you like baseball i would read this book! "
— Devin, 9/28/2010" Loved the parts about actually playing baseball and all that goes with it. Did not love the main plot that serves as a warning about steroids. Also, the dialog was not very realistic among the 12 year-old protagonists. "
