" Utter disappointment. I wasn't expecting much, as I don't like Margaret Peterson Haddix, but this failed even my low expectations. It was depressing and had no subplots. It was predictable and I could not even stand to pick up the next book. *sigh* "

" This is a great start to a great series! As a 4th child, I think the idea of a world where 3rd children are illegal is pretty creepy. Luke is a hero to be and his companion Jen is brave and a leader. The ending leaves you wanting more and the journey there is anticipating. I can't stress how amazingly fantastic this book is! "

" Read this aloud with my 12 and 9 year old. My 4th grader said her teacher read this book in class. So, good to know. I liked it. It started out a little slow but by the middle of the book, we couldn't put it down. I am not a huge fan of the this genre, but there are so many out there... What I liked about this is the parallels with what has happened in history. When my children ask if something like this could really happen, I say, let's look at what has already happened. Does "civil rights movement" ring any bells? I look forward to the series, although one reader has warned against increasing violence through out the later books. We shall see. "

" I liked this but I'm not sure I'm going to go ahead and read the entire series. The storyline is compelling but the writing isn't. The beginning drags big time. Once Luke meets Jen things pick up and become interesting but that takes a while. I read this because one of my students was really into this series. While I do really like the idea behind the series, the writing was dry and I'm not sure I'll go out of my way to read book #2. We'll see... "
