" The general premise of the story sees a 19th C American transported to 6th C Britain, creating 'miracles' thru his superior understanding of science and engineering, and thereafter trying to remake society along modern lines. There are many jibes throughout at feudalism, superstition, and the Church then, as seen thru modern eyes. Generally light hearted reading, with many portions that made me chuckle, tho there are (few) serious moments throughout the book. The ending is a sad one, tho it is altogether so fantastical and overwrought that one does not feel the despair of so many deaths. And it was a nice touch for Merlin's magic to *finally* work. "
