Arkeley nailed the last vampire, in a fight that nearly killed him. But the evidence proves otherwise.
When a state trooper named Laura Caxton calls the FBI looking for help in the middle of the night, it is Arkeley who gets the assignment. Who else? He’s been expecting such a call to come eventually. Sure, it has been years since any signs of an attack, but Arkeley knows what most people don’t: that there is one left. In an abandoned asylum, she is rotting, plotting, and biding her time in a way that only the undead can.
Caxton is out of her league on this case and more than a little afraid, but the Fed has made it plain that there is only one way out. The worst thing, though, is the feeling that the vampires want more than just her blood. They want her for a reason, one she can’t guess … a reason her sphinxlike partner knows but won’t say … a reason she has to find out—or die trying.
Now there are only thirteen bullets between Caxton and Arkeley and the vampires. There are only thirteen bullets between us, the living, and them, the damned.

"Having read Wellingtons zombie series I started this one with some trepidation. The zombie series started out good and ended up smelling like a rotten corpse with the last book. With this book Wellington starts the reader off into a journey with vampires. I felt that this was a very good book with plenty of blood sucking and rotten corpses popping up here and there. The ending will definitely leave the reader hanging and having to follow up with the next book in the series to receive any type of closure to the story. I am just hoping that there is enough to this story to carry it through the next four books in the series."

“There is plenty of gripping, fast-paced action and enough carnage here to delight the hearts of horror buffs.”
— Library Journal" Far better than his farbisin zombie series. I've got hopes for this one. "
— Sabur76, 2/15/2014" I'm a sucka for a vampire novel. The main character is a lesbian cop! "
— Bek, 2/11/2014" I read this in a couple of days, bearing in mind I was at work, both at the pub and JS... If I had been able to read it continuously I would probably have finished it quicker... It is a fast paced, well written, and leaves you wanting more, which thankfully there is... "
— Michelle, 2/5/2014" I rated this series a bit higher than I normally would. Maybe I'm just feeling generous. This is Moby Dick with vampires. And not the pretty "ooh, I love you let's be together forever" crappy vampires from Twilight. No, these are the nasty not-quite-human-anymore vampires like in 30 Days of Night. "
— Dale, 1/31/2014" Poor story with forgettable characters, a disappointing ending, and lugubrious plotting. "
— Steven, 1/23/2014" I really liked this book, but then again I'm no real lover of the vampire, I tend to cheer for vampire hunters. I think if vampires existed they would be much like the ones in 13 Bullets. They are MONSTERS after all. "
— Andy, 1/20/2014" Not your typical vampire story and worth reading but I'm not sure if I'm going to pick up any of the others. Do they get better? How's this compared to the Strain? "
— Joe, 1/20/2014" This book presents an interesting take on vampires and what it takes to kill them; however, the ending is quite abrupt, noticeably leaving the primary protagonists with no closure. "
— Lori, 12/19/2013" A horrific thrill ride - kind of like Dracula meets Silence of the Lambs. I love that the vampires are actually portrayed as monsters (and nearly indestructible) instead of the charming, sexy vamps that are so in vogue in popular literature today. "
— Elaine, 12/4/2013" Awesome! Nasty gore soaked, gun shooting, double fisted, hammy action. Excellent. "
— R.John, 9/28/2013" violent, graphic, disturbing...brilliant! and not a glittering vampire in sight :) "
— Travis, 3/7/2013" sigh. I kind of knew this wouldn't be the paranormal or urban fiction that I prefer and crave. I was grossed out early on, and that's odd considering my favorite genre, but I have to abandon this. "
— Diane, 11/8/2012" Amazing for horror lovers! Wellington modernizes the vampire genre this is a MUST READ! "
— Slf5587, 7/22/2012" Started out very strong, grabbed my interest right away. But found the main character, Caxton, an unlike able character half way through. Did appreciate a different take on vampires- (not romantic). "
— Claire, 6/5/2012" Decent pacing. Nice twist at the end but other than that nothing earth shattering. Vampires that are evil pieces or work and lack any sparkle at all (thank god). I will probably check out the next book in the series to see if there is an attempt to develop the characters more. "
— Jason, 1/31/2012" Sometimes when I was bored, I'd try to think of the most absurd traffic accident. I think I decided on a crash involving a blimp and the space shuttle. This book is kind of like that. "
— Joshua, 1/15/2012" A very different take on the whole vampire culture! Once I got over the change.... I really, really liked it! "
— Brazen, 11/2/2011" It was a decent listen, was a bit unfair for me to go right to this from the Newsflesh because I enjoyed that series immensely. "
— Michael, 9/5/2011" Oh Holy Crap! I can't say how much I enjoyed this series. I tore through these like popcorn. I'm a casual fan of vampire stories, but I need to create a whole new scale to measure this book's greatness! "
— Shawn, 4/20/2011" Bastante sangriento y desagrable en algunas ocasiones. A parte de eso no aportada nada nuevo pero al menos entretiene y deja ganas de leer el siguiente "
— Dácil, 3/20/2011" I thought the story dragged on way too long. I didn't like the lead character and it was too predictable. I won't continue to read this series. And I probably won't return to reading anything from this author. "
— Marta, 3/19/2011" A fun read. Kind of an abrupt ending, but I assume the next book in the series will pick up the story where this one left off. "
— Wordnerd64, 3/14/2011" Non stop action. Complete awesomeness. And yeah, I just said awesomeness. "
— Aliah, 1/27/2011" I devoured it in a few hours and went back for more (of the series). "
— Sroit, 1/10/2011" An awesome book. These vampires are a bit more animal like so theres really no reasoning with them. they are also super hard to destory, which makes them even cooler. besides the vampires, the story is really detailed and well played out and will definitely keep you wanting more. "
— Sierra, 1/5/2011" a lot of great action. "
