Publisher Description

With 13 ½, Nevada Barr, New York Times bestselling author of the award-winning Anna Pigeon novels, has written a taut and terrifying psychological thriller. It carries the reader from the horrifying 1970s murder spree of a child—dubbed “Butcher Boy” by a shocked public—in Rochester, Minnesota, to Polly, the abused daughter of Mississippi “trailer trash,” to post-Katrina New Orleans.

In Jackson Square in the French Quarter a tarot card reader told Polly Deschamps she would be a success. Thirty years later, Polly is a respected professor of literature with good friends and her own home—a safe life for her and her two daughters.

Butcher Boy, released on his seventeenth birthday, shook the snow from his boots and headed south.

New Orleans, a Mecca for runaways then and now, offers sanctuary but never forgiveness.

When Polly falls in love with Marshall Marchand, a restoration architect who is helping to rebuild her adopted city, shadows of the past rise out of the poisoned ground of New Orleans as thick and deadly as the toxic waters of the flood.

Like history, some crimes are doomed to repeat themselves. Evil stays the same, only the victims’ names change. As two broken pasts collide in an uncertain present, Polly is determined that her children’s names will never be on that list.

"Very creepy book. Dylan, 11 and Richard, 15 are the only two left in the family after their family is attacked and died with an axe. Dylan is accused of the murder. He can't remember anything. This is a thriller. 30 years later, with new names, Dylan (Marcus) is married to Polly. He is afraid he will hurt her and her 2 daughters, but loves her totally. When Marcus feels threatened, terrible things start to happened."

" This was quite different from Barr's Anna Pigeon books that I like so much, but this one was liked as much or more. The dark side of the author comes out in this book of a child convicted of killing his family. "

" I had two sweet little old ladies who were sisters on my plane. They told me how much they love Nevada Barr so I picked this one up at random. Not what I was expecting! I was interested in the characters but she jumped around so much it was confusing. I knew very early on who the bad guy was but it was interesting to see how she resolved the story. "

" Had not ever read a "one-off" of Nevada Barr previously. Usually reading her Anna Pigeon books. This, while having a very dark theme, and a fairly easy to determine ending, was still a good read. Another good picture of life in New Orleans. "

" I'm sorry that this book wasn't better. Maybe I expect too much from mysteries, like well developed and credible characters, or at least semi-opaque story lines. I will admit I read until the end, but certainly not to find out what happened or whodunnit. I finished it merely out of boredom. If you want a good mystery with characters you not only believe in, you want to hang out with them, read Tara French's "In The Woods". "

About Nevada Barr

Nevada Barr was born in the small western town of Yerington, Nevada, and raised on a mountain airport in the Sierras. Pushed out of the nest, she fell into theatre, receiving her BA in speech and drama and her MFA in acting before making the pilgrimage to New York City, then Minneapolis. For eighteen years she worked on stage, in commercials and industrial training films, and doing voiceovers for radio. During this time she became interested in the environmental movement and began working in National Parks across the country during the summers. Woven throughout these seemingly disparate careers was the written word. Nevada wrote and presented campfire stories, taught storytelling, and was a travel writer and restaurant critic. She has won both the Agatha and Anthony awards for best first mystery.
