His life is one of peaceful routine and incompetence until he inadvertently stops a bank robbery.
That's when the first ace arrives in the mail. That's when Ed becomes the messenger. Chosen to care, he makes his way through town helping and hurting (when necessary) until only one question remains: Who's behind Ed's mission?

"After reading The Book Thief, I knew I had to read more by Markus Zusak--and he didn't disappoint. While The Book Thief is still infinitely better, I Am the Messenger is a great book, and was extremely enjoyable (after all, I did start and finish it today). It captures your interest from the start, and the interesting plot and characters, coupled with Zusak's writing, will keep you reading to the end."
— Andrew (4 out of 5 stars)
" Good book. I'd read it again. I have a soft spot for books set in Australia. "
— Dennis, 2/18/2014" This was a quick and easy read but I thoroughly enjoyed it. While you can sort of predict the end, the writing hooks you to Ed and you just can't help rooting for him. In a lot of ways, Ed reminds us of ourselves because he is ordinary, complacent, and insecure so you want him to succeed and change for the better. For his sake and yours too. "
— Kara, 2/8/2014" I. Love. This. Story. The ending? Well, I had to re-read, and think about it, then re-read again. Then I got online to see what other people thought about the ending. After all of that, I changed my rating from four stars to five. I loved Ed Kennedy, Audrey, The Doorman, and even, in the end, Marv. Lovely, sweet story. "
— Debra, 2/4/2014" Fantastic! What a unique read. Very different from his other book, "The Book Thief", but excellent all the same. "
— Charley, 1/21/2014" Excellent book! The description sounds depressing but it really is inspiring. My son when he was 15 loaned me his copy and told me I would like it. He was right! "
— Lisa, 1/19/2014" I loved this book almost as much as I did The Book Thief. Clever and inventive, it continually suprised me. A wonderful introduction to Zusak if this is your first book by this author. I'd read this one before I read the Book Thief. "
— Troy, 12/22/2013" I didn't enjoy this book as much as The Book Thief. The story is different, and the characters are developed well. However, I'm not sure how I feel about it overall. "
— Kaija, 12/20/2013" This was beautiful. It really got to me. I'm going to be thinking about this one for a long time. I'll have to come back and do a real review later. "
— Allison, 12/3/2013" It was a great read. Easy. Not a huge fan of the ending but worth the journey. "
— Ray, 11/14/2013" I read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and thought it was good so I decided to read another of his books. I Am the Messanger was an even better read. I loved it!!! It was great and I look forward to reading more from him. "

— Nancy, 9/30/2013" I think after this and The Book Thief I am a Markus Zusak fan. His characters are well developed and fun to read. I love the idea of trying to be a better person than you think you can be. We should all probably try to do a little of this every day. "
— Maria, 9/10/2013" When i finished this book all i could think was wow what an amazing book everyone should read this story. The first chapter was so hilarious I was laughing out loud and people were staring me. you should pick up this book and read it you won't be disappointed. i know i wasn't. "
— Syd, 2/15/2013" I picked this book up because the author wrote one of my all time favorite books, The Book Thief. Now this book is not as good as The Book Thief, but really how could it be. The plot was intriguing and pulled me in, however, I felt the ending was weak and just fell flat. "
— Cortney, 11/5/2012" Loved the story, love the writing style, love this author for his wonderful 'book thief', would have given a five star rating if not for the anticlimactic ending. Despite the dissapointing ending, I am still happy to have spent my week with Ed as he delivers his messages. "
— Dee, 9/20/2012" If you were called on to make a difference in a stranger's life, would you? Incredibly touching acts of kindness, courage & friendship. I didn't want this book to end! A brilliant author with incredible stories. Please don't ever stop Markus!!! "
— Rachel, 8/13/2012" I liked it... but his writing style, and just the way he personifies everything, was so distracting. I think it took away the rhythm of the story. "
— Oats, 7/6/2012" I thought the characters were interesting especially the main character. I also really liked the style of writing for this book. I'd recommend it! "

— Bridget, 5/20/2011" Everyone should read this book. Especially those of you who don't know what you want to do with your life. I've read it like 4 times now. "
— Esther, 5/19/2011" this book is for people who can handle coming of age, and for those who aren't "you suck". "
— Manuela, 5/17/2011" I hope I am not expecting too much after reading The Book Thief which was an amazing book!! We shall see.

Not too bad overall. It definitely held my attention - which is always a plus! It wasn't up to the same depth and quality as The Book Thief . . . but it was a good story nonetheless. "
— Michelle, 5/15/2011" One of my favorite books of all time. Should be required reading for everyone! "
— Beth, 5/15/2011" I really enjoyed this book. It's more like a 4.5. I hardly ever give a 5. "
— Lorraine, 5/14/2011" This was an interesting book - VERY different in the plot and in the style it was written. The author is certainly an original. It's not my favorite book of all time, but it kept my attention until the very end. For that reason alone, it deserves a high rating. "
— MaryHelen, 5/13/2011" Not as good as The Book Thief, definitely not for younger readers as there are sex references and coarse language. First few chapters were absolutely terrible but they get lots better. "
