Roger Bannister, CBE, was the first person to break the four minute mile, which he did in 1954 with a time of 3:59.4 as a twenty-five-year old medical student. Bannister retired from running shortly after to pursue a distinguished career in neurology. He was a master of Pembroke College at Oxford University until his retirement in 1993.
