Story about a scientist who discovers a deadly species of fly in Africa and wishes to use it for the elimination of an adversary. He disregards the superstitions of the Africans who believe that the soul of the one killed by this "devilish fly" enters the body of the insect.

Another work almost entirely authored by Lovecraft. His creation was particularly the idea concluding the Winged Death, even though it was rejected in "Strange Stories" – supposedly, another author had come up with a similar punchline earlier. The editor-in-chief of "Weird Tales" pondered for a long time before accepting the story.

H. P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant twentieth-century authors in his genre. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he lived most of his life. His relatively small corpus of work consists of three short novels and about sixty short stories.
