The short story is often viewed as an inferior craft in relation to the novel. In reality, it is an art in itself. To take a story and distill its essence into fewer pages while keeping the characters and plot rounded is not an easy task. In this collection we examine some of the short stories of H. P. Lovecraft, one of the greatest American short story authors of all time.
Of the many authors who write horror, there are few true masters of the genre. H. P. Lovecraft achieved fame because his work is of a standard of excellence that few—if any—can rival. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1890, he was a prodigious but sickly youth. Raised mainly by his grandfather and aunts, at the age of fourteen he contemplated suicide after the death of his grandfather and the resulting financial blow to his family. A set of literary spats in a newspaper brought his attention away from his poetry writings, but the works for which he is so well known did not arrive until the last decade of his life.
