In the second thrilling adventure of the New York Times bestselling Ali Reynolds series, Ali’s soon-to-be-ex-husband turns up dead under mysterious circumstances, and Ali soon finds herself the prime suspect at the center of a terrifying web of evil.
The highway from Los Angeles to the Palm Springs desert is parched, unforgiving, and deadly. In the suffocating stillness of a car trunk, a man—his mouth and hands bound with tape—waits to learn his fate. Fortunately for him, he’ll never know. What possible enemy could be bitter enough to commit such a heinous crime? And when will the monster make another move?
Ali Reynolds is traveling that same blistering, lonesome highway, looking forward to putting her past behind her. She’d left Los Angeles for the home comforts of Sedona, Arizona. But her cheating husband is in a hurry for a divorce; his very young and very pregnant fiancée has a wedding planned for the next day. And the television network that wrongfully dismissed Ali for the sole sin of being over forty will face her in court as well. So, Ali must return to the scene of those crimes. As she passes the site of a horrifying accident, she’s thankful it’s no longer her job to report the news. Until she finds out the news is her own: the victim is Ali’s husband, and soon she’ll find herself the prime suspect at the center of a terrifying web of evil.

“Jance delivers a devilish page-turner.”
— People“Characters so real you want to reach out and hug—or strangle—them. Her dialogue always rings true.”
— Cleveland Plain Dealer“Gripping…Jance's skills will keep the reader riveted…Ali couldn't be better company.”
— South Florida Sun-Sentinel“Heart-stopping…Jance deftly brings the desert, people, and towns of southeastern Arizona to life.”
— Publishers Weekly" This is the second in the series featuring former TV anchor, Ali Reynolds. Tightly paced, full of twists. I did wish the setting had stayed in Arizona, though. "
— Marianne, 2/18/2014" A Likeable character in a predictable plot. Enjoyable escape reading, great for traveling or summer "
— Terri, 2/10/2014" J.A. Vance always writes page-turners! Although, it seemed to have 3 endings! Just when you thought it was over... Still, a quick, easy read. "
— Suzeesg, 2/4/2014" For an educated TV Reporter, Ali Reynolds sure is stupid. This character must have been just a "Talking Head" not actually investigating anything in her former job. She takes crazy chances, acts so naive and trusting for a woman of her age and experience. Totally not believable. I was so disgusted with this character that I'm not sure that I will continue reading this series. "
— Ann, 1/24/2014" This is the second in Jance's "Ali Reynolds" series and takes place in Los Angeles after Ali's soon to be ex-husband is found murdered. I read an online review that called this story "uninspired" and described the plot developments as "clumsy," and to be honest, I think that reviewer was being kind. Ali Reynolds is the least like-able of all Jance's protagonists. There really is no reason to read this one. "
— Bruce, 1/11/2014" Very good! I enjoyed it very much and stayed up late to finish it because I just couldn't put it down! "
— Barb, 1/11/2014" Quick reading, very entertaining. "
— Lori, 1/11/2014" My first book by her. I think my mom, who lives in AZ gave me the book. Not bad, but not memorable. In six months, I'll see the book in our pile of paperbacks and likely as not have to work to recall if I read it. An interesting story, characters to care about, but light and fast. "
— Larry, 1/2/2014" listened to this on my ipod and really enjoyed it. "
— Shelleen, 12/29/2013" Trying to prove her she had nothing to do with a crime. "
— Vicky, 11/22/2013" This book was okay. Kind of predictable and I really couldn't get to excited about the main character. She just kept doing stupid stuff. Like hiring high priced lawyers and then completely ignoring there advice. I probably won't read this author again. "
— Jan, 3/20/2013" I really like J.A. Jance. The stories keep you interested, and you never really are sure if what you think will happen, will happen. They are mysteries without the gore that seems to be a must for entertainment anymore. I plan on reading more of her books... "
— Connie, 3/11/2013" Perfunctory, but nothing outstanding (or close). "
— James, 12/27/2012" Just wasn't very exciting. "
— Jenn, 12/26/2012" Like the Ali Reynolds charcter alot. "
— Polly, 12/22/2012" Jance's books are just plain fun. Super easy read - mystery-lite. Love her characters. "
— Ray, 11/20/2012" Good, easy read. Reads like a movie. Read in one day. "
— Brenda, 11/4/2012" my first Jance...I will add her to my to read list "
— Christa, 10/19/2012" I enjoy the Ally Reynolds books. There is nothing terribly intellectual about them and I don't find them as gripping as, say, a David Baldacci novel, but they are fun to read and fun to listen to in the car (where I get a lot of book time in). "
— Linda, 7/27/2012" Ali becomes the sole heir and prime suspect after a murder occurs. "
— Amanda, 6/15/2012" just as enjoyable as the first. easy read, keeps interest "
— Barb, 3/14/2012" I enjoyed the book. Interesting characters. Light mystery, but good. "
— Lynette, 12/15/2011" A little too much on the romance novel spectum for my tastes. I have read 3 of the 4 Ali Reynolds books, this is my least favorite. "
— Patrick, 5/18/2011" J.A. Vance always writes page-turners! Although, it seemed to have 3 endings! Just when you thought it was over... Still, a quick, easy read. "
— Suzeesg, 4/11/2011" Very intelligent heroine who doesn't always use her intelligence or even, good judgement. Probably won't read more of this series. <br/> "
— Laurie, 3/17/2011" I like all of J A Jance, but this was somewhat lower on my list. "
— Charles, 3/5/2011" I am loving this series about Ali Reynolds. "
— Alexandra, 2/24/2011" LOVED LOVED LOVED this book. It was SO well written. Another book where you keep trying to guess who really did what, but you never reallly know. "
— Robin, 2/12/2011" This was quite the convoluted story line. Every time I thought the story was going to wrap up, I'd realize there are still more pages to read so they still had more ends to tie up. The book was good, but I think it was a bit too long and too convoluted. I still enjoyed reading the book. "
— Phillis, 2/8/2011" It keeps you reading to the very end with it's turns and twists. "
— Linda, 12/14/2010" Decided to finally read one of her books after she came to our town and speak - although I was unable to attend. People kept telling me how good they were. I did enjoy this book. "
— Carol, 9/19/2010" Well written book that held my interest throughout. "
— John, 8/19/2010" this was a good book, i just wish i would have realized it was part of a series. it was great by itself, but starting at number 1 would have been better :-) "
— Crystal, 8/15/2010" Surprisingly good altho; the plot got rather complicated "
