Naomi Novik’s triumphant debut, His Majesty’s Dragon, introduced a dynamic new pair of heroes to the annals of fantasy fiction: the noble fighting dragon Temeraire and his master and commander, Captain Will Laurence. Now in the latest novel, they soar to new heights of breathtaking action and brilliant imagination.

It is a grim time for the dragon Temeraire. On the heels of his mission to Africa, seeking the cure for a deadly contagion, he has been removed from military service—and his captain, Will Laurence, has been condemned to death for treason. For Britain, conditions are grimmer still: Napoleon’s resurgent forces have breached the Channel and successfully invaded English soil. Napoleon’s prime objective: the occupation of London.

Separated by their own government and threatened at every turn by Napoleon’s forces, Laurence and Temeraire must struggle to find each other amid the turmoil of war and to aid the resistance against the invasion before Napoleon’s foothold on England’s shores can become a stranglehold.

If only they can be reunited, master and dragon might rally Britain’s scattered forces and take the fight to the enemy as never before—for king and country, and for their own liberty. But can the French aggressors be well and truly routed, or will a treacherous alliance deliver Britain into the hands of her would-be conquerors?

" I enjoyed this book in the series very much. But in all the books, Simon Vance's narration is wonderful. I have listened to 4 of the Temeraire books he has narrated, and I love the voices he gives to Lawrence and all the dragons, especially Temeraire. It is MUCH more fun to listen to the Temeraire books read by Simon Vance than it is to read them myself! "

" I like dragons and their stories. This novel wraps history around fantasy. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Arlie | 1/19/2014

" The Temeraire series doesn't disappoint. I read book four over a year ago, but I was still able to slip right into book five and feel all the old affection for Temeraire and the enjoyment of the story. Novik makes all of the characters very real and lovable. I wish Laurence and Temeraire all the best! "

" I think I would have liked this more if I hadn't read the previous four directly in a row preceding. I was a bit burnt out. I'll pick it up again and savor it another time. "

" Very enjoyable! Novik somehow manages to make each book different and still keep everything there is to love about the characters. I'm impressed, anyways. "

" I love this series. It is fantastic and charming, a true joy to read! There is talk that Peter Jackson is going to make it into a mini Series- I am so EXCITED! If you love dragons, adventure, war, and wonderful writing this is a book series you sould look into ASAP! "

" A good final chapter in the story. I was a little less than satisfied with how it ended, but not everything in life has a rosy ending. It serves to remind that even when you do things right, in an imperfect world, there are often some unpleasant bumps along the road! "

" After the ending of book 4, I wondered, "how are they gonna get out of this mess?" I shouldn't have worried. Excellent world building and entwining of real history and this alternate timeline. Nice angst for Laurence and his dragon friend Temeraire. I look forward to the next outing. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Steven | 11/12/2011

" This one is pretty depressing...there are some minor victories, but basically the only thing good that happens to the protagonists is "everyone hates us and temporarily tolerates us" instead of "everyone hates us and leaves us in jail". "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Dawn | 5/12/2011

" Great book! And who ever said a dragon could not serve in the British army? Temeraire was wonderful, as always, and Laurence finally realized what is really important. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Jolanda Ellen | 4/13/2011

" Te series is just like a downsloping hill:

    Book 1 was great
    book 2 was nice
    book 3 was dull
    book 4 was boring
and now book 5, I won't even bother to finish it.
    "

" I think I still like the first book in the series best, but this one is pretty close. I really enjoyed it, especially the battle scene near the end. Again we have a cliffhanger so that I feel compelled to read the next installment. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Tracey | 3/8/2011

" It was so sad! I loved the part where the dragons from the breeding grounds showed up with Temeraire to help the battle, if only because there was the standoff between the Regal Coppers. Heh, I love those guys. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Nicole | 2/23/2011

" Again, I enjoyed the heck out of this book. Novik does a great job of showing the many consequences of Laurence's and Temeraire's actions in book 4. I spent the entire book wondering what would happen next. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Jeffrey | 2/16/2011

" Great addition to Novik's series. the first half drug on a little, but once Laurence and Temeraire get back togehter, I really loved this one. "

" This one just didn't click with me as the other books. Don't get me wrong it wasn't bad, but it felt too...easy. Like everything just clicked into placed with that much effort. But I'm looking forward to reading the next book. "
