Originally self-published, this riveting fantasy became the stuff of legend before catching the attention of the publisher who discovered J.K. Rowling. Soon after it was optioned for a major film. When 14-year-old Will Burrows goes looking for his missing father, he discovers an underground world that time forgot. Ruled by a brutal class called the Styx, "The Colony" has not changed in a hundred years. Into this dark and mysterious place go Will and his friend Chester, unsure what they will find and oblivious to the dangers ahead. Before long their extraordinary adventure unearths a terrible secret-one that may cost them their lives. Hailed as the next big thing in fantasy literature, Tunnels grips the imagination while making readers think twice about the ground beneath their feet. Narrator Steven Crossley captures the authors' unique vision with his captivating performance. "Gordon and Williams will soon have legions of fans. Tunnels is just the beginning."-Guardian (UK)

"This book has been claimed the next Harry Potter. First, it is nothing like Harry Potter, but I can see how it has the potential to be a popular series. It has a bit of a slow start, but gets going. Intriguing story line. I am excited for the next book. Then I will decide yeah or nay."

" There were a lot of things I liked about this book ... the writing didn't talk down to the reader, which I hate, and the world was convincing and drawn in sharp detail. The underground world is compelling enough that I can clearly remember it's details. The three-star review, though, is based mainly on a personal issue: I like my middle-grade books a little lighter, a little less dark and oppressive. This is a book where people eat fungus and cast swarthy, dark glances at each other, where kids are strapped to chairs and tortured, and where drunken brawls end in pools of blood. I know there's a reader out there who will love it, but I personally could have used a little more ... fun. "
— Jon, 2/14/2014" Not quite as good as City of Embers. "
— Laura, 2/4/2014" It was a good read and well written. "
— Tommy, 2/3/2014" I'm reading this with my daughter Chloe. She found the book and wanted me to read with her. Not quite sure what to expect, but we will see. "
— Amber, 2/3/2014" Very long-winded, methinks... "
— Wolfren, 2/2/2014" Slow in the beginning... But in the end you are sitting there amazed on how fast paced it got.. "
— Neon, 1/23/2014" HATE THIS BOOK!!!!!! It was very confusing and kinda dumb. I thought some parts were OK but the rest was pretty bad. I do not reccomend this book unless you are ready for B-O-R-I-N-G!!!!!!!!! "
— â¤Maura, 1/18/2014" I almost didn't make it to the middle of the story. It takes a while to unfold, but overall hanging in there was worth it. The story takes some very grim turns. This is a dark tale, and left me feeling squeamish at times--there is a definite gross-out factor. The story kept my interest once I made it about a third of the way through. The best part of the story is the description of the ominous Styx. The writing itself is rather bland, however, and the book could be shortened by a third. Nearing the end I could tell things were not going to wrap up--it was the classic setup for a series. Had I known this I would have given up after the first 100 pages. I have no intention of reading the sequel "Deeper"-- too many other good books out there. "
— Spike, 1/6/2014" This book certainly had an interesting concept but it was kind of slow to take off. Great for teen boys who like underground adventures. "
— Amy, 1/4/2014" Pretty good book about a boy who father is an archeologist and who loves to dig. Only one day his dad disappears. Following him, Will and his friend, Chester, find there's a lot more under the houses then just dirt... "
— Jess, 12/30/2013" not really interesting when i read first 300 pages, but after that it was a real blast for my fantasy. nice work by the authors! "
— Cal'shunter, 12/15/2013" This was one of the most descriptive, vivid, well-written books I've read in a long time. The plot was very interesting- hopefully some of the questions I still have will be answered in the sequel. "
— Sarah, 12/4/2013" Has no story line. "
— Kari, 7/9/2013" This book was amazing, full of discovery and anticipation! Totally original, this book is a must-read, if there is any problem with this series, it's that the books are too long! But seriously, this book is a fantastic journey. "
— Wilson, 3/15/2013" This is a great summer read. It's exciting, fast-paced, and the detail the author uses helps you to envision the underground world Will discovers with precision. The occasional illustrations add to the book's eerie feel. Hopefully the movie does the novel justice. "
— Jordan, 11/11/2012" Thought this was a fun quick read. Went through it real fast. Leaves ya hangin in the end. Will read the new one when it comes out. I see now it is so will have to go find it. hehehe "
— Shila, 9/13/2012" There was no emotion to draw you into the story or make you care about the characters. It was simply a stating of a story, event after event. Boring. "
— Mokamonkey, 7/26/2012" Oh my gosh! This book is awesome!!1 Slow at first but gets better! Can't wait for the second "
— Tom, 4/18/2012" This book kept my interest and was full of twists and turns! "
— Mrs., 10/28/2011" Creepy and kind of boring... I didn't really like it... "
— Hanny, 10/25/2011" I don't know if I really liked this book or not. It was just a bit depressing and hopeless. As a parent the whole situation with Chester is what left me depressed. I'm hoping the next book might have a happier outcome. "
— Jill, 8/15/2011" Will and Elliot need to get together!!!!
How dare she run to Chester at the end of the book :( "
— Nicole, 5/24/2011" I absolutely HATE this Tunnels series.... and I can't stop reading them. I mean really, everything a person could possibly dread is in this book- torture, being trapped under ground, starving, Nazis. I mean, Nazis????? "
— Tara, 4/27/2011" Another great book, loved every moment, and I can't wait till October when the sequel comes out. "
— Heather, 4/12/2011" More non-stop action!...Book 5 comes out in the UK in October of this year, in the US in 2012. Don't think I can wait for the US release. "
— Bryan, 3/22/2011" GREAT! I can't wait until the next book, Spiral, to come out and for the movie, tunnles, to come out either! "
— Aven, 3/13/2011" I liked this book much more than the last one and I felt like it didn't leave you hanging with what happens next despite knowing there is another sequel on the way. It reminded me of the first Tunnels book but had a stronger story line with overlapping plots. "
— Jennydall, 3/5/2011" This is one of the better books of the series, but I am ready for the story to wrap up. How long are they going to milk this story; when can we expect the conclusion? "
— Casey, 2/22/2011" Closer was a good book. i enjoyed this because of the adventure, mystery, and nail biting suspense. if i were you, i would definitely read this book. "
— Reece, 2/11/2011" I loved the series because they use strong vocabulary and description, so I learn a lot of new words. The characters are always scheming, and making plans that depend on many factors, I would find it hard to be able to come up with things like that. "
— Sarah, 2/4/2011" it's great..
kinda bored at the beginning,,
but can't wait for the next book!! "
— Ivelli, 1/30/2011" Suspensful! Twisty! Turny! I love everything this series chooses to be! "
— Shianne, 1/24/2011" This book is as good as Freefall, better than Deeper and Tunnels, very fast paced, it's hard to put down. I'm glad I forked out some extra cash and ordered it from the UK so that I didn't have to wait for it to be released in May in the US. Plus UK editions are more authentic! "
— Matthew, 12/16/2010" awesome. ill tell you what i think later. got to BUY it first.
FEBRUARY 1ST HERE I COME!!!!! "
— Sol, 12/1/2010" I've always assumed that the adventure of Will Burrows and friends are over in Closer. I was completely wrong. The story gets bigger and better and all the more addictive. I couldn't put it down. "
— Sitti, 11/15/2010" great book want the next one to come out so bad! "
