Join actors from Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation as they recreate this classic radio thriller. The breathless pace and convincing details make it clear why the 1938 broadcast of an “eyewitness report” of an invasion from Mars caused a nationwide panic. Originally directed by Orson Welles and performed by his Mercury Theatre of the Air, The War of the Worlds is an adaptation of H. G. Wells’ novel of the same name. The War of the Worlds is truly the mother of all space invasions, offering a rare combination of chills, thrills and great literature.

  • “LA Theatre Works…produces star-studded audio plays. Here it presents a re-creation of one of the most famous dramas, the 1897 sf tale that terrified a nation, joining three Star Trek alumni—Leonard Nimoy, Brent Spiner, and Gates McFadden—to render a high-octane performance of the time when many were convinced Martians had indeed invaded Earth.”

About the Author

H. G. Wells (1866–1946), born in Bromley, Kent, England, was apprenticed to a drygoodsman and a druggist before he made his way to the Royal College of Science where he studied biology. Known as the father of science fiction, he was also a prolific writer in other genres, including contemporary novels, history, and social commentary. As a spokesman for progress and peace, his middle period novels (1900–1920) were more realistic and covered lower-middle-class life, suffrage, and the emergence of feminist ideals that pushed against the limits set by male-dominated society.

About the Narrators

Leonard Simon Nimoy (1931–2015) was an American actor, film director, poet, musician, and photographer. His most famous role was that of Spock in the original Star Trek series, as well as in multiple film, television, and video game sequels. He began his career in his early twenties, teaching acting classes in Hollywood and making minor film and television appearances through the 1950s, as well as playing the title role in Kid Monk Baroni. He made his first appearance in the rejected Star Trek pilot, “The Cage,” in 1965 and went on to play Spock until 1969. Spock had a significant cultural impact and garnered Nimoy three Emmy Award nominations. TV Guide named Spock one of the fifty greatest television characters.

Armin Shimerman is familiar to science fiction fans as Quark on Star Trek: DS-9 and as Principal Snyder on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. An acclaimed stage actor, he has also cowritten four science fiction novels.

John de Lancie is an actor and voice-over artist known for his numerous television roles, including Star Trek, Stargate SG-1, and Breaking Bad. He has also been featured in the popular Assassins Creek video game series and has appeared on stage at the American Shakespeare Festival, the Seattle Repertory Company, and the Old Globe, among others. He is married to actress-singer Marnie Mosiman, and they have two sons, Keegan and Owen.

Wil Wheaton is an award–winning actor, voice artist, author, and audiobook narrator. Among his movie credits are Stand by Me and Toy Soldiers. His many television credits include Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Big Bang Theory, and Generator Rex. As a narrator of more than a dozen audiobooks, he has twice won the prestigious Audie Award, twice been a finalist for the Audie, and earned an Earphones Award from AudioFile magazine.
