Publisher Description

The so-called "Roman dream," excerpted from a letter to Donald Wandrei dated November 2, 1927. In this dream, Lovecraft was a quaestor in one of the Spanish provinces under Roman rule. In the town of Pompeii, an ancient people threatened the city, performing terrifying rituals every year on the eve of November. This dream, rich in details and frightening in its suggestiveness, was inspired in the writer by reading the Aeneid translated by James Rhodes.

H. P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) was an American author who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. Virtually unknown and only published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, he is now regarded as one of the most significant twentieth-century authors in his genre. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, where he lived most of his life. His relatively small corpus of work consists of three short novels and about sixty short stories.
