The only sign of life for miles is an empty BMW. Inside the expensive car he finds clothes that fit perfectly, shoes for his tattered feet, a Rolex, and an auto registration in the name of Daniel Hayes, resident of Malibu, California. None of it is familiar. How did he get here? Who is he? Who was he? While he searches for answers, the world searches for him - beginning with the cops that kick in the door of his dingy motel with guns drawn. Lost and alone, the man who might be Daniel Hayes flees into the night. All he remembers is a woman’s face, so he sets off for the only place he might find her. The fantasy of her becomes his home, his world, his hope. And maybe, just maybe, the way back to himself. But that raises the most chilling question of all: What will he find when he gets there? "It's been a while since I read a good ol' mystery, so I enjoyed returning to this genre. The beginning was a bit fractured and at times confusing, but in hindsight that wa actually a clever portrayal of the life state of Daniel Hayes! When the story takes a big twist in the middle, I couldn't put it down. Marcus Sakey had several surprise turns at the end which tied up all loose ends. This was a quick, entertaining summer read."

" This book is getting so much summer-buzz, I wanted to read it before I encountered a spoiler. It sure kept me reading but I'm clearly in the minority by not being completely blown away by it. It was fun but the ending left me a little "Huh" (both in the confused sense and in the underwhelmed sense). It was okay and I enjoyed watching the mystery unfold but the pay off just wasn't really there for me. "
— Mary, 2/13/2014" A man wakes up naked on a beach and doesn't remember where he is or how he got there. From there it is all thrills and chills as he attempts to find out what happened to him and where he belongs. Plenty of twists and turns, with some very good characters and some not so nice people. Sakey's writing is as always suspenseful and he's from Chicago. "
— Diane, 1/17/2014" Really enjoyed this one...very well written. Full review later. "
— Autumn, 12/27/2013" A mystery, which are normally not my favorite. It was an easy read, but some things in the book did not connect and you just had to let them go. It was okay- had some moments, but the surprise for me was predictable. "
— Gwen, 12/23/2013" A good story with a different way of telling it, I really enjoyed it. "
— Pam, 12/16/2013" This was a well written, fast paced mystery. I really enjoyed the plot and finished the book in two days "
— Mairead, 11/28/2013" Screenwriter Daniel Hayes wakes up on a beach in Maine with no memory. The adventure begins as he tries to piece his life together. Did he murder his actress wife Lanie? Is he wanted by the police? With twists & turns galore, This is one enetertaining read! "
— Grace, 11/18/2013" This was the first novel I've read by Marcus Sakey, but it won't be the last. Full of plot twists and red herrings, it's a roller coaster of a book. I read it in a day because I couldn't wait to find out what happened. "
— Susie, 10/17/2013" Pleasantly surprised. Kept me guessing. I would definitely recommend it, thanks Aimee! "
— Leila, 10/15/2013" Excellent story that I couldn't put down this weekend. Better not to read a summary, just dig in. "
— Robin, 10/12/2013" It got me hooked on the first page, which is unusual, as it normally takes a good 20 pages to work out what the story is going to be about. There were sufficient twists and turns to keep me interested up to the final twist. "
— Ranju, 6/9/2013" Another tale of memory loss. Exciting pace, keeps you guessing. "
— Debbie, 5/1/2013" Excellent plot-drive noir/crime novel with lots of unexpected twists and turns. Nice reworking of noir tropes (memory loss, femme fatal, moral ambiguity). Fast moving, exciting, quick read (perfect for a plane trip). I will be reading more Marcus Sakey the next time I get on a crime novel jag. "
— Adam, 1/12/2013" Not to bad. It was entertain and went quickly. "
— Jan, 8/23/2012" I always enjoy reading Marcus Sakey. As usual, the story moved quite fast and made for a quick read... "

— Cheri, 6/20/2012" Really great read. I enjoy the plot twists and never being quite sure of which direction it was going in! "
— Tara, 6/3/2012" this is story of a man's symbolic death and rebirth, written in a beautiful and evocative prose. it is also an incredible mystery in the truest sense. highly recommended, altho you may not be able to tear yourself away for mundane tasks like eating and sleeping. "
— Cynthia, 5/2/2012" Excellent; a man awakens naked and in the ocean, with no memory of his past, and works to reconstruct it; some of the best late plot twists I've seen in a while "
