An anthology of seven short stories: * “The Desert Here and the Desert Far Away” (nominated for Thriller and Macavity Awards) * “The Days When You Were Anything Else” * “No One” * “Gravity and Need” * “As Breathing” * “Cobalt” * “The Time Before the Last” These stories of men and women pushed to—and beyond—the ragged edge demonstrate why National Public Radio declared Sakey writes “crime drama for the 21st century.” “Author-narrated titles can be hit or miss. This one hits the bull’s-eye. Bestselling crime novelist Marcus Sakey delivers the seven stories in this collection, bringing out their powerful images and psychological complexity with an intense yet conversational narration. Listeners are drawn into each unique story and main character. Sakey’s skillful approach to pacing and emphasis enhances the listening experience. In a short story, every word matters. Sakey delivers on each one. K.C.R. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine”

"Very enjoyable collection. The stories "The Deserts Here and the Deserts Far Away" and "The Days When You Were Anything Else" were great. So was the story "The Time Before the Last," which I included in my anthology Hint Fiction."

— Kristine, 11/18/2013" I'm not a big fan of short stories but these are spectacular. Sakey keeps on getting better and better. "
— Huluriasquias, 6/2/2013" Excellent collection of stories told in Sakey's unmistakable style. "
— L.a., 1/11/2013" This is a book of short stories...I've never read one like it before and it was only ok for me. I didn't dislike any of the stories but I enjoy a longer book that I can get involved in. This just didn't do it for me. "
— Susan, 12/24/2012" You can read my thoughts here. (3.5/5) "
— Joy, 6/15/2012Marcus Sakey’s thrillers have been nominated for more than fifteen awards, named New York Times’ Editor’s Picks, and selected among Esquire’s Top Five Books of the Year. Marcus was also the host of the acclaimed television show Hidden City on the Travel Channel, for which he was routinely pepper-sprayed and attacked by dogs. Prior to writing, he worked as a landscaper, a theatrical carpenter, a 3-D animator, a woefully unprepared movie reviewer, a tutor, and a graphic designer who couldn’t draw. He lives in Chicago with his wife and daughter.
