To anyone who glanced casually inside the detention room the young man sitting there did not seem very formidable...unless one was observant enough to note those light-gray eyes and catch a chilling, measuring expression showing now and then for an instant in their depths.

The young man in question, Ross Murdock, is about to embark upon the adventure of his life. In order to avoid prosecution, he reluctantly joins Operation Retrograde, whose members are exploring various time periods.

Their goal? To find out where - and when - the 'Reds' are obtaining certain scientific breakthroughs, in order to maintain the balance of global power. An outsider in his own time, Ross becomes an outsider in other times as well, and faces one challenge after another. Will he succeed? Or will he inadvertently alter time forever?

Listener Opinions

" Good '50's SciFi from a classic author. This was a rollicking good adventure that probably contributed to the development of many of today's SciFi authors. It' kind of like reading an early episode of Star Trek. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lindsay | 11/29/2010

" Some interesting ideas and it was easy to like the main character, although there could have been a bit more character development. "

" Simple but charming tale of travelling back in time, overcoming adversities and the occasional alien. "

" Another rather dated book from SF Master Andre Norton. Two novels re-released together. In each, an outsider stumbles into the clandestine government Cold War time travel program. Some interesting stuff, but nothing that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Nostalgic fun though. "

" This was one of the first books I can remember reading, and I continue to think about it.

So, my beginnings in reading started with Science Fiction.

It is relatively simple, but, again, I think about it to this day. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Steven | 1/7/2010

" Interesting concept, but poorly executed. Minimal plot, and most of the book centered around running away from yet another pursuer. I like a frivolous sci-fi book now and again, but this was just dumb. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Marman | 11/26/2009

" It's a clean and exciting book although I find it lacks the action that usually comes with stories of this scale. It's a timeless piece because it spend most of it's time on character and plot rather than technical jargon. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Gerold | 10/22/2009

    " I enjoyed this time-travel book though the writing-style is a little outdated. "
