Andre Norton enthralled readers for decades with thrilling tales of people challenged to the limits of their endurance in epic battles of good against evil. None are more memorable than her Witch World novels. Simon Tregarth, a man from our own world, escapes his doom through the gates to the Witch World. There he aids the witch Jaelithe's escape from the hounds of Alizon, only to find himself embroiled in a deeper war against an even deadlier foe: the Kolder.

"My wife gave this one to me (she had an old copy from when she was younger). I WAS HOOKED! My wife had a few more in the series, and I devoured them. We started scouring used book stores and Ebay to purchase other books in the Witch World series, and when I finished those I began checking out copies from libraries to read the rest. They are difficult to find because they're old, but I recommend them if you like fantasy and witch stories. This book got me hooked on the genre and I haven't stopped since."

" I liked this book! It was clean and interesting! "
— Chiyomi, 2/9/2014" Mixed feelings... Once more. It seems I am pretty bad at making up my mind. On the one hand the change of worlds motif is pretty common but it's presented nicely. The world of the witches presents an interesting mix of original powers, races and a clash of magic and technology. On the other hand the book seems a bit too... short? Its pace is 'old-school' in a sense - there are many lapses and time gaps. It feels like more time and space could have been spent in some parts - especially for the protagonists introduction to the worlds. It is pretty strange that he adapts so well and mingles in with almost no problems. "
— Jakub, 1/22/2014" I love Norton, and I find even her juveniles great fun, but this book is a real chore. No plot, action that is all over the place and the characters are all duds. The series as a whole picks up, the but the first is probably the weakest of the bunch. However, don't let it turn you off to the joys of reading Andre Norton. "
— Jared, 1/18/2014" if you like fantasy and sci-fi, you need to read Andre Norton. I remember the magic of discovering this series. and time allowed, I will read it again. "
— Gj, 1/17/2014" The premise of this novel is interesting enough, but the execution is a bit weak. The resolution of the major conflict was a little too simple, and the romantic relationships at the end were trite. The writing was decent, but the overall plot progression left something to be desired. Details were adequately developed, but something about the characters (even the main character, Simon Tregarth) made them seem hollow. Overall, I wasn't too impressed, but liked it just enough to keep reading. "
— Mandy, 1/1/2014" my first fantasy "
— Gonia, 12/9/2013" This is a great writer. I am reading it again. Great story. "
— Liana, 12/8/2013" This was one of the first fantasy books I ever read. Recently I tried to re-read it and was pretty disappointed. Yeah, so Andre Norton may not be the best writer, but she introduced me to a whole new genre of fiction and it really stuck. I think her books have heart. "
— Julie, 12/6/2013" Read this years ago - should re-read it "
— Peter, 12/3/2013" I kept having to remind myself when this was written because the dialogue was definitely more old-fashioned than books I have been reading lately. "
— Tammy, 12/2/2013" one of my favorite authors "
— Laurie, 11/29/2013" One of my favie series "
— Grant&Mimi, 11/19/2013" I read this and loved it as a teen.I would like to read it again soon, Parts of it stuck with me and I wonder if it would still be as good. "
— Pam, 11/19/2013" Meh. Very definitely fantasy from the early 60's. Sort of a stepping stone between the pulp of the 40's and 50's, and the better stuff (in my opinion) to come like LeGuin onwards. "
— Ian, 1/31/2013" Matter of fact, dry storytelling that still maintains your interest and draws you into this world in ways other fantasy I have read does not. A book I have re-read more than once; one of my all-time favorite books and series. "
— Therese, 12/9/2012" I loved the Witch World series and have re-read the books several times. "
— Suzanne, 11/7/2012" There are eldritch powers and transports between worlds but they are powers of the mind and machine. "
— Nicole, 10/5/2012" One of the first SF&F writers I read and fell in love with. Witch World set the stage for a life long love of all thing SF&F... "
— Nick, 10/2/2012" An older book, 70's , maybe. I read this recently. Very different than what is out there today. I enjoyed. Very magical, mystical. "
— Renamski, 3/18/2012" It's been awhile since I've read this but I would like to have it for my own llibrary. "
— Jacque, 3/9/2012" I started reading Andre Norton in the mid 60's. Loved them then and now. Great adventure, gripping story lines, strong women and men doing the right thing. What's not to like? "
— Murphy, 2/15/2012" Old school fantasy/sci-fi. Wrote my thesis about this book and other Andre Norton's. This is my favorite of the series. No feminist protagonist, but strong female characters and even stronger feminist implications. "
— Kat, 1/10/2012" I love the Witch World. I think Andre Norton is very original. I always want more when I come to the end. A very quick read. "
— Jeanne, 10/12/2011" Slow plotting, but overall an excellent read "

— Victoria, 1/14/2010" Just as good as I remembered from the first time I read it in 1985. "
— Mary, 12/6/2009" FNA, this book is absolutely enthralling. A new dimension of depth is added that absolutely draws me into the story, I loved it! "
— Eric, 3/23/2009" A good follow up to Witch World. I have it in Hard back from the SF book club. The volume includes the first three books. "
— Charles, 8/8/2008" One of the Witch World series, it continues the stories about this entertaining and exciting world. "
