Laura Lippman won the Nero Wolfe Award for this powerful mystery. Former journalist turned P.I. "Another good "episode" for Tess. This one is set back in Baltimore with a side trip to the Eastern Shore. The places are so familiar that I feel like I'll see them when I walk down the street. I also like the interaction with her family, there's a lot of character growth for Tess in this book. Both in how she tackles ethical dilemmas and how she judges those around her for the way they handle similar things."

" The book was pretty good it kept my interest the whole way through. Loved the main character she had spunk but was also caring. "
— Melissa, 2/19/2014" First I ever read and then I was hooked. "
— Elisabeth, 2/11/2014" It was a great read. I continue to like Tess. What can I say this is a great series. "
— Kj, 2/5/2014" I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the rest of the Tess Monaghan series. "
— Melissa, 1/29/2014" enjoyed the deeper story development "
— Julie, 1/27/2014" Fast paced. First book I've read with Tess Monaghan as the PI. Well developed and likeable character. "
— Misshkey, 1/19/2014" Not my favorite of this series. I wish it was told in first person. The narrator changed as well, and that made it harder to listen to. I'm taking a break from this series since I checked ahead and the narrator changes a couple more times. "
— Mickey, 1/12/2014" good....plot was decent. "
— Judi, 1/12/2014" great. little long. "
— Katherine, 12/31/2013" I just loved the way this book flowed...one turn led to another turn and then to another turn and then...and so on. It was amazing how Laura was able to juggle all the different situations and yet have them all connected and sown up in the end... Good job! "
— Chris, 10/25/2013" I liked it well enough to check out her other books. The characters were likable. "
— Deb, 10/8/2013" Another fine entry in the Tess Moaghan series --- though this one sure had a lot of coincidences. And I still am not sure how one character (a shady lawyer/lobbyist) came out -- was he guilty of anything? "
— Martha, 9/2/2013" another Tess Monahan mystery. "
— Kwoomac, 8/21/2013" I read this Baltimore based book while visiting a town near Baltimore. It was an exciting mystery with interesting character development and it gave me insight into Baltimore. Very fun. I'm going to start with the first of the Tess Monaghan series next time I visit. "
— April, 8/2/2013" Clasic Laura Lippman - good plot, decent writing but not amazing. The arch-typical three star book. I won't remember a ton of it but won't be upset that I read it. "
— Blurb, 7/15/2013" A bit disjointed and with some coincidences that just felt silly. Still, enjoyable. "
— Julie, 5/20/2013" light, quick read in the her tess pi series. "
— Robin, 5/13/2013" Still really enjoying these books, plus enjoying the jolt of excitement when I know where in Baltimore Lippman is describing. If anything's going to sell me on Baltimore, it's as likely to be these books as anything else. "
— Liz, 3/22/2013" Another complicated plot...which I had no hope of figuring out. But it was a great story and this time I didn't get confused. This author is good at coming up with dicey ideas. Liked it! "
— Janette, 12/31/2012" Just okay. But I don't regret reading it. Plot got off to a good start but later became quite predictable. Good denouement however. Very good. I'm glad I gave this book a chance "
— Sophie, 10/5/2012" This book got good reviews...why?? A very disjointed story...just could not force myself to even finish it. "
— Dottie, 9/29/2012" Best story yet in the Tess Monaghan series. "
— Shari, 5/13/2012" Another great read... Lippman's books just keep getting better and better in her Tess Monaghan series... "
— Heidi, 3/4/2012" It was a good mystery with some twists and turns. Not having read any of the Tess Monaghan books before the whole cast of characters got a bit confusing. "
— Jeanne, 12/2/2011" Good story. Terrible narration. "
— Sandra, 11/8/2011" Unfortunately, since I read this book over six years ago, I cannot remember it well. At the time, I wrote that it was a very good Tess Monaghan story. She tries to ID a dead girl, so she can determine why the girl's killer was murdered in prison. 3.5 stars. "
— Carolyn, 10/19/2011" More enjoyable stuff, and again I want to read more to see how Tess gets on after these adventures. "
— Fionna, 9/25/2011" This was my first Tess Monaghan mystery and it was ok, she is not my favorite PI but she's good. The story kept me interested and I did find characters fascinating. "
— Ginny, 9/20/2011" I read this right after a visit to Baltimore because it was set there. I didn't find the plot all that difficult to figure out and therefore got bored waiting for my assumptions to be confirmed. A little too fluffy for me. "
— Molly, 9/14/2011" Fun as always. Love this Tess character. "
— Anita, 5/17/2011" light, quick read in the her tess pi series. "
— Robin, 4/26/2011" Best story yet in the Tess Monaghan series. "
— Shari, 4/14/2011" Very predictable in parts, and I didn't find the writing style to be particularly strong. While Lippman tells a pretty good story, she's also key in on stereotypes. "
— Sarah, 4/11/2011" Baltimore politics, corruption and eating disorders "
— Helen, 3/31/2011" I thought this book was okay for a Edgar Award book. It was your typical Lippman book. "
— Jill, 3/26/2011" I'd say this is more of a 2.5 star book. I didn't hate it, I didn't love it, but I still enjoyed it. I'm interested in reading some of the other in this series. I love series of books. "
— Michelle, 3/20/2011" Liking these more and more. I find that I read #6 already so I am going on to #7 and have ordered #6 to read again. I just want to keep Tesser's life in order. "
— Linda, 3/15/2011" How interesting, I'm convinced that Lippman can do no wrong. I'm now on her 6th book and I can't put down the Tess Monaghan series. Fantastic. "
— Melinda, 3/14/2011" I love Tess....I love to see how Lippman develops her character throughout the series. "
— Debbie, 2/28/2011" Tess has found her man Crow and together they’re making a good go of the situation. Tess has been asked to try to find the identity of a Jane Doe who died and the harder she tried to find the girls name the uglier things get. "
— Vfields, 2/8/2011" I like Lippman--I like the main character, books about Baltimore, and a good murder mystery. This one has it all. "
— Mom, 2/7/2011" I liked it well enough to check out her other books. The characters were likable.<br/> "
— Deb, 1/10/2011" This book got good reviews...why?? A very disjointed story...just could not force myself to even finish it. "
