Publisher Description

Set amid the gloomy castles and lonely heaths of medieval Scotland, "Macbeth" is a dark and bloody drama of ambition, murder, guilt and revenge. Goaded by his ambitious wife, Macbeth murders Duncan, King of Scotland, in order to succeed to the throne. But he soon learns the meaning of terror—killing once, he must kill again and again, and the dead return to haunt him. Tortured by his conscience and fearful of discovery, the Scottish nobleman becomes tangled in a web of treachery and deceit that ultimately spells his doom.

This performance by a distinguished cast that includes Anthony Quayle, Ian Holm, Alec McCowen and Stanley Holloway provides an intimacy and subtlety that ensures a rare treat for lovers of Shakespeare.

About William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (1564–1616), English poet and dramatist of the Elizabethan and early Jacobean period, is the most widely known author in all of English literature and often considered the greatest. He was an active member of a theater company for at least twenty years, during which time he wrote many great plays. Plays were not prized as literature at the time and Shakespeare was not widely read until the middle of the eighteenth century, when a great upsurge of interest in his works began that continues today.
