Publisher Description

The Two Gentlemen of Verona is believed to be one of Shakespeare's early comedies and as a result provides us with the first examples of a number of themes and devices that are further explored in many of his plays. These include loyalty, friendship, and the nature of love. Also women dressing up as men is introduced by one of the central characters, Julia, dressing up as the page, Sebastian, to serve her loved one, Proteus, who has betrayed her. Although there are fewer characters than in most of Shakespeare's other plays, they are interesting ones, and Ghizela Rowe captures the story of this intriguing play with clarity in her reading.

Valentine and Proteus are devoted companions, but when Valentine leaves Verona for Milan, a series of events lead to confrontation and deception.

About William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (1564–1616), English poet and dramatist of the Elizabethan and early Jacobean period, is the most widely known author in all of English literature and often considered the greatest. He was an active member of a theater company for at least twenty years, during which time he wrote many great plays. Plays were not prized as literature at the time and Shakespeare was not widely read until the middle of the eighteenth century, when a great upsurge of interest in his works began that continues today.
