Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807 in Portland, Maine into a privileged background. Studious, he worked hard and grew to love languages and poetry from an early age. He traveled extensively in Europe for three years, immersing himself in various languages, and became much influenced by its poets. From there, he returned to the United States and eventually taught at Harvard.
Today he is rightly known as an icon of American poetry with classics such as "Paul Revere's Ride" and "The Song of Hiawatha." In this collection we bring you further examples of his great talents that read undimmed to this very day.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882) was the most popular and admired American poet of the nineteenth century. Known for his narrative historical and mythic poems, his most famous works include Evangeline, The Song of Hiawatha, The Courtship of Miles Standish, and Tales of Wayside Inn. Versatile as well as prolific, Longfellow also won fame as a writer of
short ballads and lyrics, and experimented in the essay, the short
story, the novel, and the verse drama.
