Publisher Description

Death is a subject that few of us talk about even though it is a (perhaps dreadful) fact of life. And whether it is the actual end of our life's journey or merely a transit point to the afterlife is something no one knows. But what do poets think of it? How do their minds tangle with the subject and make sense of this? In The Poetry of Death we have collected poems from poets as rich and diverse as Henry Longfellow, Robert Burns, Khalil Gibran, and many others to share their words, thoughts and visions with us. Death is unavoidable, but the journey there should be as informed and enjoyable as possible.

About the Authors

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882) was the most popular and admired American poet of the nineteenth century. Known for his narrative historical and mythic poems, his most famous works include Evangeline, The Song of Hiawatha, The Courtship of Miles Standish, and Tales of Wayside Inn. Versatile as well as prolific, Longfellow also won fame as a writer of short ballads and lyrics, and experimented in the essay, the short story, the novel, and the verse drama.

Thomas Hood (1799–1845) was a British humorist and poet. He entered the English literary society as associate editor of London Magazine, and authored many humorous works on contemporary issues. Known as a humorist, his poetry did not at first fare well in the public eye, though he eventually found great success in this capacity. Nine years after his death, a monument was erected in his memory in the cemetery of Kensal Green.
