The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them both, this is a game in which only one can be left standing. Despite the high stakes, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences, and leaving the lives of everyone, from the performers to the patrons, hanging in the balance.

  • Welcome to Le Cirque des Rêves: Within these nocturnal black-and-white-striped tents lies an utterly unique experience, a feast for the senses. Beyond the smoke and mirrors, however, a fierce competition is under way—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to the players, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination.
  • But when Celia and Marco innocently tumble head first into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands—their masters intervene with dangerous consequences.
  • Erin Morgenstern’s singular and spell-casting debut is a mesmerizing love story for the ages.

  • “[Morgenstern] employs her supple prose to conjure up a series of wonders: a maze made of clouds, a ship of books floating on a sea of ink, a tent that seems to contain a vast desert.”

  • “Morgenstern’s exquisitely realized world will have [you] wishing to run off and join the circus.”

    USA Today

    Christian Science Monitor

  • “A Victorian curio cabinet…In The Night Circus, Morgenstern makes the artificial real, turning atmosphere into art.”

" Well, I can't quite say that I read this one. While the imagery was fanciful and creative, the story was a bore and I put it down, never to pick it up again. The author seems to have lumped her dreams and visions of magic and the use of black and white all into this book, but forgot to make the characters interesting. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 by Sarah Beightol | 1/5/2014

" Great for book club, not long or heavy read. Lots of different aspects (romance, mystery, drama) so appeals to large dynamic. "
