Annie Proulx's books include the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Shipping News and the story collections Bad Dirt and Wyoming Stories. A story from that collection, Brokeback Mountain, which first appeared in The New Yorker, has been made into a feature film directed by Ang Lee; it premieres in December. She is at work on a memoir about building a house on what will become an avian preserve.

Richard Ford is the author of five novels, among them The Sportswriter and Independence Day, which won a Pulitzer Prize. His most recent book, the story collection A Multitude of Sins, includes several stories from The New Yorker. His novel The Lay of the Land, the third in the Frank Bascombe trilogy, will be published next year.

About Annie Proulx

Annie Proulx is the author of eight books, including the novel The Shipping News and the story collection Close Range. Her many honors include a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Award, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, and a PEN/Faulkner Award. Her short story “Brokeback Mountain,” which originally appeared in the New Yorker, was made into an Academy Award–winning film starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Proulx currently lives in Wyoming.
