The bodies of four men have been discovered in the town of Bradfield. Enlisted to investigate is criminal psychologist Tony Hill. Even for a seasoned professional, the series of mutilation sex murders is unlike anything he's encountered before. But profiling the psychopath is not beyond him. Hill's own past has made him the perfect man to comprehend the killer's motives. It's also made him the perfect victim. A game has begun for the hunter and the hunted. But as Hill confronts his own hidden demons, he must also come face-to-face with an evil so profound he may not have the courage - or the power - to stop it...

"I approached this book a little nervously for several reasons. The first Val McDermid book I tried - Conferences are Murder - felt dry and stilted. It hadn't put me off completely but I'd been surprised, as everyone seemed to rate this author so highly. Secondly, I had watched the Wire in the Blood series and really enjoyed it but I'm always wary of trying the book after the TV/movie version. I loved the characters in the TV series and wasn't disappointed by the book. It is most certainly graphic - harder to read than to watch - and I don't remember the TV series stilting on the violence. The book intersperses the serial murder case and the burgeoning relationship between Carol Jordan and Tony Hill with excerpts from the murderer's diary. I don't always have the strongest stomach for this level of violence but the author got so far under the skin of this character that it felt oddly appropriate. I had to abandon American Psycho because I just couldn't take the mindless violence, but these scenes, although mind-blowing in their gore and cruelty at times, always felt in keeping with the grittiness of the story. Nothing felt out of place and, violence aside, it was easy reading because the storytelling was so effortless. Not for the faint hearted though - this is hard-boiled crime writing."

" I loved this book even more than the series, Blood in the Wire. Highly recommend. "
— Tammy, 2/18/2014" I would give this 3.5 stars. Very good murder/mystery/thriller.....not for the squeamish. Serial killer who uses ancient torture devices on young men. While the subject matter was at times disturbing, the characters really drew me in and I was interested and a bit surprised. I finally quit trying to figure it out and just went with the story. I needed a fast-paced read after some slow burners this summer. I will definitely check out the next in the series....as I enjoyed the setting and characters. "
— Shelli, 2/17/2014" This was a good book. I liked the interaction between Tony Hill and Carol Jordan. The story was a good mystery and I will read the next installment in this series. "
— Laurie, 2/14/2014" Any of the Tony Hill novels I find hugely fascinating, love the character and all his complexities. Problem I have is that I cannot help but visualise the cast of the TV series when I read these, but that isn't such a bad thing.... "
— Anji, 2/11/2014" I really enjoyed this book. Interesting characters. I think I'm officially a Val McDermid fan...next! "
— Katherine, 1/25/2014" Loved this book - couldn't put it down! "
— Sarah, 1/23/2014" Holy violence batman. The first Dr Tony Hill novel - the man who is attempting to bring profiling to England's police forces. "
— Elizabeth, 1/15/2014" If you like mysteries, this is good, but not for weak stomachs! "
— Aimee, 1/10/2014" I couldn't put this book down. I don't know if its because I'm a huge fan of the TV Show or because this is a very interesting book with relatable characters... maybe both. if you happen to like serial killer books pick this up, you wont be dissapointed. "
— Adriana, 12/30/2013" A little dated now in that the police don't seem to have mobile phones yet, but a great story which kept me guessing to the end. Rather gory and not for the faint hearted. "
— Ruth, 12/27/2013" I love this series which has led to the highly successful tv sweries . "
— Helena, 12/18/2013" Fantastic and nail-biting "
— Anne, 12/17/2013" A quick read, well-written although not so keen on the graphic violence. "
— Avrilbrown, 6/22/2013" A very eerie thriller from one of Britain's top suspense writers. This is part of the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series by the author which was made into an excellent television series on BBC. "
— Ben, 1/21/2013" "Good, complex plot with many interesting characters. Detailed, rich prose. Dr. Tony is a bit strange, the whole phone call thing. And I didn't feel like the detection process led to solving the crime quite as much as hoped. But overall, a great crime novel worth reading." "
— Erich, 12/24/2012" Very good plot well written "
— Roger, 10/13/2012" I'm not so sure about Tony Hill, but I love the character of Carol Jordan. Tony Hill is too connected to the killer, I guess thats the point. Poor Carol, she needs to place her affections elsewhere but I doubt she will. "
— Gail, 7/24/2012" The first Dr Hill and Carol Jordan book. A real treat to go back and fill in the missing hole. A well crafted story that was quite graphic and hard to read at times. The last 100 pages flew past, even though long before the "twist" was revealed it was clear that Tony was a target. Awesome book. "
— Ginnz, 7/14/2012" Grisly, but otherwise uninteresting. "
— Gary, 6/29/2012" Good read. The first Tony Jordan book. I prefer the later books in the series, as the characters develop. Rather glad Tony is impotent. We find out about it in this book. I don't want the leads to do anything but go after serial killers. "
