"This is a beautiful creation of what we Jane Austen enthusiasts would imagine her love life would be. Intriguing and smart and full of the heartwrenching details of a life of one of the most influential writers of all time. Syrie James really captures the heart of Jane Austen."

" This fictional account of Jane Austen's memoirs is true to the timeline of her life. Very well written. It seems like it is Jane Austen's memoirs. "
— James, 2/12/2014" An okay fictional memoir about one of my favorite authors. I found the footnotes to be a bit much. James uses footnotes to authenticate her Austen research, but the whole story is so obviously fiction and makes the footnotes seem silly. "
— amypete, 1/30/2014" Author took the easy way out in telling this story. She used sections on Jane Austen's books to make her story. One is left to believe that all Austen's stories were almost totally built using her own experiences, contacts and family down to their exact words and phrases. "
— Maura, 1/30/2014" Enjoyable read especially the first two-thirds. She captures some of the spirit and beautiful language I so love with Jane Austen. And it is entertaining to have my most beloved author become the main character. "
— Karen, 1/27/2014" I much preferred The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte by this author than this book. It was still enjoyable. "
— Diane, 1/24/2014" I adored this fictional life of Jane Austen. I must add it to my collection immediately! "
— Brindi, 1/20/2014" I loved this book! We read it for our most recent book club, and even though it's been a LONG time since I've read Jane Austen, it was like it all came back! It was hard to put it down...I just wanted to see what would happen next. Definitely a must read! "
— Mackenzie, 1/16/2014" This is the second "memoir" by Syrie James that I have read in less than a month and that may not have been a good thing though perhaps it is just that I prefer Charlotte Bronte to Jane Austen. Whatever the reason, I did not find this one as enthralling as the Charlotte Bronte book. This one was well written and well researched but it lacked the tenderness of the other. I know it's not fair of me to compare the two but there you have it. I did enjoy this one and I would give it 3.5 stars if that were possible on this forum. Overall, I think any Jane Austen fan will enjoy this. "
— LeeAnne, 1/16/2014" This was a light, enjoyable novel. It is based on Jane Austen's writings, and was an interesting, yet quick read. "
— Kathryn, 1/12/2014" Austen fans will love this historical fiction, which gives spinster Jane a great love. "
— Kate, 12/30/2013" Though this "memoir" is loosely (and minimally) based on the truth, if you're a Jane Austen fan, you will love this book! It is a great read. The beginning is a bit slow going, but once Jane meets Mr. Ashcroft, you can't put the book down. "
