Syrie James approaches Bram Stoker's classic Dracula with a breathtaking new perspective-as, for the first time, Mina Harker records the shocking story of her scandalous seduction and sexual rebirth. Who is this magnetic, fascinating man? And how could one woman fall so completely under his spell? Mina Harker is torn between two men. Struggling to hang on to the deep, pure love she's found within her marriage to her husband, Jonathan, she is inexorably drawn into a secret, passionate affair with a charismatic but dangerous lover. This haunted and haunting creature has awakened feelings and desires within her that she has never before known, remaking her as a woman. Although everyone she knows fears him and is pledged to destroy him, Mina sees a side to him that the others cannot: a tender, romantic side; a man who's taken full advantage of his gift of immortality to expand his mind and talents; a man who is deeply in love and who may not be so guilty of evil after all. Yet to surrender is surely madness, for to be with him could end her life. It may cost Mina all she holds dear, but to make her choice she must learn everything she can about the remarkable origins and sensuous powers of this man, this exquisite monster, this...Dracula! " I adore James' writing and eagerly looked forward to reading this one as soon as it was released. I do wish that I hadn't read 'Dracula in Love' before this one because I kept making unfair comparisons and 'Dracula in Love' kept winning. This was a good read and I enjoyed my time that I spent in Mina's world. I liked her spin on the Dracula story as well, but I needed more passion from Mina, especially when it came to Dracula. Overall, when I closed the cover for the last time I felt satisfied with the story and was glad that I spent some time reading this book. "

" I mostly bought this book with a silly title on a lark. I expected it to be empty but I liked the original story of Dracula so well that revisiting the same characters in another way was a welcome thought. I was pleasantly surprised at how capturing the story was and how much I got drawn into the story. I highly recommend it for any romantic Dracula fans who like a dark love story. "

" I enjoyed this book in spite of the whiney monotonous blathering of the main character. Overall it was a good story. "

" I enjoyed this re-imagining of Dracula from Mina's point of view but did take issue with her being so indecisive and naive. The writing was wonderful and I felt like I was in the pages with these characters. "

" I love this book. I had to force myself to take breaks during reading this book or else I've finished it within 2 days.
The story is romantic in a dark, gothic way. Just the way I liked it. It's perfect for me :)

" What a wonderful take on the classic Bram Stoker tale. To hear the story from the viewpoint of Mina Harker was very refreshing. Dracula is seen in a whole new light as a handsome, erudite man of means and a charismatic lover. "

" Another quick read. Not a ton of depth, but set turn of century East Coast. Young woman, engaged to marry, then meets Dracula (unaware of course). Their love story. The old fashioned sexual tension kind. Great for the beach. My husband laughed at me reading it, but a nice escape from reality. "

" It was an interesting twist of sorts to Dracula, my favorite class book. I'm still sad, however, that even in this version, Dracula is dead. Oh well, I guess he's just not meant to live. "

" I think that this book would be most enjoyable if you read Dracula first. I like these sorts of books that take a different viewpoint on a known story. She is a good writer, and knows her stuff; it just moved a little too slowly for me. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Sandy | 2/8/2011

" A fun and entertaining read from Mina's perspective...I never made it all the way through Dracula so don't know how true to the book the author stays, but I know she fills in holes that Bram left in place. Nice to see that Mina had a bit more spunk than Bram gave the women in his novels! "

" A well-done retelling of the Dracula legend. This tells the story from Mina's point of view, keeping to the original storyline and filling in all the unanswered questions. "
