"Lives of Christopher Chant was much more adventure-filled than the first Chrestomanci book. This is a prequel to the first book, though it really does need to be read after the first one, not before. Christopher has "dream" traveled to other realities since he was young but as he gets older and people begin to find out about his abilities, complications arise. Lots of them. I like how the book had a great twist with who is good and who is bad getting switched up. That's always one of my favorite plot devices! After reading this book together, my kids and I now started calling our favorite salad dressing "Millie Dressing" instead of Green Goddess dressing because of a character in the book. It is always fun to have great stories become ingrained in family culture."

" Christopher Chant has a unique ability to enter other worlds while he sleeps, but the violent mishaps that occur in these dreams have a funny was of coming true in his ordinary life. I love this story because of its unique ideas and the fact that it is told realistically from a child's point of view so that at times we are as fooled as the main character by events. "
— Mary-Beth, 2/19/2014" Another Chrestomanci. In case you were wondering, no, you do not have to read any of the Chrestomanci books in order. They are stand-alone. "
— Jenna, 2/13/2014" A real crowd-pleaser - everybody in the family loved this one. "
— Mech, 2/1/2014" Although this is billed as #2 it really is the first in the series, since it is the childhood of Christopher Chant. Utterly delightful; Jones was doing Harry Potter way before Harry was ever thought of. "
— Brenda, 1/18/2014" Great fun! I think I like this best of the Chrestomanci books I've read so far. "
— Polly, 1/16/2014" For me, this is her best book after HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE. Christopher is a funny narrator. "

— Vance, 5/11/2011" currently: my FAVORITE book. this book is the BEST!!!!!!! it has EVERYTHING! humor, romance (not much, so dont worry if you dont like that stuff!) Science fiction, drama, bad parenting, you name it, its got it! realy amazing and i would suggest it to anyone! <br/>:) "
— Tikikitty, 5/1/2011" I really enjoyed this prequel to Charmed Life. It was fun getting to know more about both Christopher and Millie (her back story surprised me a lot!). Reading this has definitely made me excited to read more Chrestomanci books. "
— Meredith, 4/24/2011" A tale of an English schoolboy wizard that long pre-dates Mr Potter. In someways, it's a much slighter, less-developed tale. In other ways, it's better for being quieter, slower and less frantic. Already well-known but deserves to be better-known. "
— Richard, 4/13/2011" What a fantastic tale! And it's told in such an irresistible way. "
— John, 4/7/2011" This was my first Diana Wynne Jones book, and the one that made me crave more of her writing. Sentimental. "
— Val, 3/28/2011" Not quite as enjoyable as the first book. "
— Jenne, 3/19/2011" When I was little this was one of the best books I had ever read, and to be honest to this day it's probably still pretty awesome. "
— Christian, 1/5/2011" I thought it was AWESOME! One thing though--the world filled with rude, stuck-up, prideful people was only inhabitated by black people? Is Diana Wynne Jones a racist? "
— Stephanie, 12/15/2010" This was wierd/cliche, but oddly entrancing. "
— Emily, 12/14/2010" A real crowd-pleaser - everybody in the family loved this one. "
