Paul Hoffman's novel of astonishing scope and imagination, featuring a darkly gifted teenage boy at the center of a brutal holy war, grabs the reader from its incredible opening lines and refuses to let go. The Left Hand of God is the first novel in an epic, ambitious trilogy that will prove irresistible to the readers who have turned the Inheritance Cycle, Twilight, and the His Dark Materials series into publishing phenomena. The Left Hand of God is the story of sixteen-year-old Thomas Cale, who has grown up imprisoned at the Sanctuary of the Redeemers, a fortress run by a secretive sect of warrior monks in a distant, dystopian past. He is one of thousands of boys who train all day in hand-to-hand combat, in preparation for a holy war that only the High Priests know is now imminent. He has no reason to think he's special, no idea there's another world outside the compound's walls, and no hope for a life any different from the one he already knows. And then, Cale opens a door. What follows is a daring escape, an unlikely alliance, a desperate pursuit, a journey of incredible discovery, and an adventure the likes of which Cale could never possibly have imagined, culminating in Cale's astonishing realization that he alone has the power to save his world- or to destroy it. "This is the most AMAZING book I have ever read!!! When I first picked it up I imagined a book dedicated to religion and religious beliefs but after I've read it I've realized just how magnificent it is!!! I would recommend this book to people who love a mysterious and murderously good book!!! "

" Starts out strong, but ends up just another teenage love story where you want to scream at the main character for being a moron. I found a lot of situations where the narrative didn't make sense, or a character did something that was unexpected and this was always explained as "well I dont know why I did that". As thought the author also had no idea what was going on. Things like character development, motivations, and reasoning are pretty light on substance. And all the sections of teenage romance are such an overdone trope that it feels unoriginal and lame. Also, learn how medieval war works before writing about it... Will probably just read a summary of the next two books in the trilogy to see how things work out, not worth "
— B, 5/5/2021" This was a frustrating book. I liked yet didn't like it. It threw me, when into his carefully constructed fantasy world, the author introduced 'real' things, such as a race called 'the Norwegians', and a place called Stamford Bridge (an area of London, also the name of Chelsea Football Club's ground). This destroyed the fantasy element for me, but otherwise it's a decent book, although the writing style is a bit, well, clunky! It's an interesting storyline, and I would probably be convinced to read a sequel, as I'm sure there will be one. "
— Lynne, 2/20/2014" Add this novel to the list of "how the hell did this ever get published?" "
— Christian, 2/16/2014" ...review to come... "
— BeguileThySorrow..., 2/8/2014" I found it really hard to like Cale... He was jus such an assehole! But I loved the story! And I think I started to like not liking him... So I now like him! "
— Michelle, 2/7/2014" Beginning was great, end was pretty good, but the author really can't do internal character development very well. That having been said the world was interesting enough for me to forgive that AND the blatant plot theft from English history/Shakespeare. "
— Eric, 2/6/2014" Ripping great story! "
— Nos, 1/18/2014" Was pretty good, you get into the mind of the blokes...will definitely read the next book! "
— Ngarangikanewa, 10/25/2013" I still read teenage books! This one is superb: to fight or not to fight? "
— SnowWhite5, 9/2/2013" Good story, liked the feel and flow of writing. Not certain I like how they worked in the religious creativity of the story, but enjoyed it enough that I will read the second book. "
— Deborah, 7/16/2013" Great start and such promise but just out of reach of being amazing. As an aside, I greatly enjoyed the author talking to us directly! "
— Roshio, 2/3/2013" Pretty good story line. "
— Malia, 10/21/2012" Great characterisation, disappointing plot. "
— Gemma, 6/29/2011" Simply a brilliant book! Enough said. "
— Ingvild, 5/19/2011" A fascinating unique and rich world. Was supposed to last me a week. Lasted 48hours in stead. I found I kept on creeping away from what ever I was doing to find out where the hell it was going. "
— Robin, 5/4/2011" I hate the politics with the Materazzi in this book, but other than that, a great read. "
— Gwen, 4/25/2011" enjoyable, still think about it .....so yes enjoyable and good settings "
— Peter, 4/23/2011" This is generally not my type of fiction, but I found myself unable to put the book down. I'm excited to read the next and upcoming book in the trilogy to see how this story will unfold. "
— Chacelyn, 4/20/2011" I saved this hard-cover edition from my local "Big Lots". It sickens me to see good lit. in the "value" bin. Oh well my gain. So far, very very good. Better than I'd of thought of a value buy. "
— Devon, 4/17/2011" The adventure of Thomas Cale is a thrilling story, and you will not be able to put down his and his 'friends' amazing adventure once you've picked it up! "
