"My cousin gave me this book to read about 10 years ago and I remembered enjoying it at the time. I am now reading through audiobooks and the title caught my eye. I enjoyed it just as much. I did a little research this time into the history of "sin eaters" and was quite surprised to find how revered and yet reviled they were. And all this was done in the name of Christianity. The characters are so well developed and believable. I found it to be a very enjoyable, entertaining and educational book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical novels"

" A classic. I don't know about the rest of Rivers's work--they look a little like formulaic romance novels--but this one is in style very like a mandatory high school reading classic. "

— melody, 1/3/2014" This one took on a different feel than her other ones but her research and informative nature was still there. Through this easy read story my eyes were opened to another cultures traditions on dealing with a human need, how to get right inspite of our sin. I enjoyed this book "

— Haley, 11/24/2013" This book was good, but it wasn't one of my "binge" books - I could set it down without feeling like I was going to loose my mind. It had a good message on redemption and forgiveness. I think the book "Redeeming Love" by the same author is better. "
— Chloe, 11/11/2013" This is one of my favorites. I can't say how much this book just stays with me. The imagery, the message - not easy to forget. It really takes you to another place in it's beauty and is compounded with such a precious message. In fact, I think I might need to read this one again soon! "

— Sylvia, 11/3/2012" This book was okay, a little cheesy in parts. Story was pretty interesting, although sometimes predictable. It did leave me with a good feeling too. Not a fake, wishful-thinking feeling, but a solid, hopeful feeling. Nice to read a book like that! "

I really enjoyed the dialect, hard to read at first, but after awhile it totally makes the understanding of the time, early 1800's, fascinating! "

— Ingrid, 2/7/2012" I loved this book. It is a little hard to get into due to the language used in the book. They are from Ireland, I believe. There is now a movie about the book too. This is a good read! "
— Yoli, 9/14/2011" This book is sooo good! I can't put it down. "
— Holly, 5/20/2011" I would have liked this book better if she didn't try to write in a way that showed the accents of the people speaking all the time. It was interesting to see that people used to live with the idea of a "sin eater," and I liked the redemption that was brought to that community. "
— Meghanmcfarlin, 5/14/2011" This one started out kind of slow, and I didn't really understand it at first, but then it all came together and I loved it. What an awesome story about a whole "village" finding the Lord with the help of a man of God and two young kids. "

— Debra, 3/10/2011" This is the only Francine River's book I've ever enjoyed. Interesting take on what happens when the intent of the Bible is misunderstood and not questioned for generations. "
— Sharon, 2/27/2011" I enjoyed the storyline, but the last part of the book got very preachy/testifying. I don't have a problem with the content, I am a believer, but it was almost to the detriment of the story. "
