Publisher Description

A sublime comedy of contemporary manners, this is the novel Jane Austen might well have written had she lived in 21st century California.

Six Californians join to discuss Jane Austen's novels. Over the six months they meet, marriages are tested, affairs begin, unsuitable arrangements become suitable, and love happens. With her finely sighted eye for the frailties of human behavior and her finely tuned ear for the absurdities of social intercourse, Fowler has never been wittier nor her characters more appealing. The result is a delicious dissection of modern relationships.

Dedicated Austenites will delight in unearthing the echoes of Austen that run through the novel, but most readers will simply enjoy the vision and voice that, despite two centuries of separation, unite two great writers of brilliant social comedy.

"6 members of the book group, 5 women and a man. Stories of each one along with a bit of discussion of JaneAustin's novels. No obvious parallels but everyone is looking for love and een the "old" lady of the group finds it. Not just about the characters but also about writing and reading novels."

" This book was ok, nothing special. I didn't hate it, but I certainly didn't love it either. Maybe at some point I'll get around to watching the movie. Maybe at some point I'll get around to actually reading some Jane Austen! I've started a few a couple of times, but never finished any of them. "

" Delightful book. Unlike many of the Jane Austen-inspired books that are being written lately, this one was actually GOOD. Well-written with complex characters. Humorous. "

" I really enjoyed this, I'm not sure what stopped me giving it full marks but maybe the fact that I read it over a period of time with breaks, a full marks novel usually proves fairly unputdownable. "

" Not as good as I expected it to be but charming nonetheless.....if you are a Jane Austen fan (as I am), you will appreciate the parallells between Austen's characters and Fowler's characters. I have not yet seen the movie so I had nothing from which to pre-judge. "

" I had rather hoped this book would be easier to follow than I found it to be. I am very fond of Jane Austen in general. This book is written in a somewhat disjointed style at times making it hard to follow the train of thought being shaped. "

" I had to compare this to the movie, since it's one of my favorites. I have to say, they did a pretty good job adapting. The only thing I don't understand is why they felt the need to change the Prudy story so dramatically.Other than that, I enjoyed the book. "
