A sublime comedy of contemporary manners, this is the novel Jane Austen might well have written had she lived in 21st century California.

Six Californians join to discuss Jane Austen's novels. Over the six months they meet, marriages are tested, affairs begin, unsuitable arrangements become suitable, and love happens. With her finely sighted eye for the frailties of human behavior and her finely tuned ear for the absurdities of social intercourse, Fowler has never been wittier nor her characters more appealing. The result is a delicious dissection of modern relationships.

Dedicated Austenites will delight in unearthing the echoes of Austen that run through the novel, but most readers will simply enjoy the vision and voice that, despite two centuries of separation, unite two great writers of brilliant social comedy.

" This book was ok, nothing special. I didn't hate it, but I certainly didn't love it either. Maybe at some point I'll get around to watching the movie. Maybe at some point I'll get around to actually reading some Jane Austen! I've started a few a couple of times, but never finished any of them. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Kristina | 1/30/2014

" Delightful book. Unlike many of the Jane Austen-inspired books that are being written lately, this one was actually GOOD. Well-written with complex characters. Humorous. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Susan | 1/19/2014

" I really enjoyed this, I'm not sure what stopped me giving it full marks but maybe the fact that I read it over a period of time with breaks, a full marks novel usually proves fairly unputdownable. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Cindy | 1/8/2014

" Nice little read. I wonder if the movie is any good? I enjoyed reading this one. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Tracey | 12/28/2013

" Loved it! This book wasn't what I expected at all ! I like the character Grigg, but not Jocelyn - it was hard to take to her. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Deja | 12/10/2013

" Why would people make a film out of this? Not that it's bad, just dull and kind of pointless. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Stephanie | 11/19/2013

" It was much more explicit about sex than I wanted to hear "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Danya | 11/8/2013

" Interesting characters, but it has been so long ago since I read any Austen, the references to the books were frustrating me. Maybe some of those are my next books to read. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Keisha | 11/6/2013

" This is one of those rare instances when the movie was better than the novel. "

" I read to page 176 and fel the book was tedious. Gave up and rented the DVD, which I liked. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Jenny | 12/30/2012

" I liked this book. I found myself wishing I could start a similar book club! But I have something even better now with our book club here! "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Amy | 10/7/2012

" This book never fully captured my attention. My interest came and went - there were good parts, and it's an interesting concept for a book, but don't waste your time. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Salimah | 6/12/2012

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Sue Davis | 6/2/2012

" 6 members of the book group, 5 women and a man. Stories of each one along with a bit of discussion of JaneAustin's novels. No obvious parallels but everyone is looking for love and een the "old" lady of the group finds it. Not just about the characters but also about writing and reading novels. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Katherine | 4/29/2012

" Bland and disappointing, not that I had high hopes for it. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Lindsey | 4/14/2012

" Well, this book surely had a really cool idea, but it was kinda boring, and I found myself not caring about any of the characters. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Jessica Simone | 9/17/2011

" I WILL NEVER REPEAT THIS I HOPE: movie might have beaten the book. Slightly upset by that. Still a fun read but not worth the time if the movie ends up being better. :( "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Kris | 8/21/2011

" This was ok, but I haven't read any Jane Austen, so all of that was wasted on me. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Molly | 8/4/2011

" Not as good as I expected it to be but charming nonetheless.....if you are a Jane Austen fan (as I am), you will appreciate the parallells between Austen's characters and Fowler's characters. I have not yet seen the movie so I had nothing from which to pre-judge. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Kat Ritchie | 5/31/2011

" I had rather hoped this book would be easier to follow than I found it to be. I am very fond of Jane Austen in general. This book is written in a somewhat disjointed style at times making it hard to follow the train of thought being shaped. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Anna | 5/20/2011

" If you are a fun of Jane Austen & would like to continiue with a story or meet people that like her that's a book for you. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Elia | 5/19/2011

" I had to compare this to the movie, since it's one of my favorites. I have to say, they did a pretty good job adapting. The only thing I don't understand is why they felt the need to change the Prudy story so dramatically.
Other than that, I enjoyed the book. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Nikki | 5/18/2011

" I might have appreciated this book more if I was a Jane Austen fan. I thought the characters were snobbish and therefore did not like any of them. It was a challenge to get through it. I would have quit reading had this not been a book club read. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Pauline | 5/14/2011

" Not a patch on the film. Ok but disappointing. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Rachelheavers | 5/14/2011

" blah. not too good, not too bad. Just another book. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Christine | 5/12/2011

" Boring. Mindless. Contrived. I finished it because I really thought it would get better. It didn't. Such a good title deserved better treatment. Disappointing. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Colleen | 5/4/2011

" One of the only times I liked the movie more than the book! "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Judy | 4/25/2011

" Interesting, but could have been more detailed and longer. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Terri | 4/25/2011

    " I enjoyed ... just a bit.

I think I was overwhelmed by the "Jane Austen" cultish-ness of the book, which seemed to overtake the personal interactions of the characters in the book club.

    "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Emily | 4/19/2011

" This is one of those rare times where I actually prefer the movie to the book. I feel like the novel gives us so much less background as well as character development, than the movie. Still, it was a cute enough read. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Wendy | 4/17/2011

" Incredibly disappointing book filled with self-satisfied and self-serving characters. "
