"I think this is my favorite of all the Lovesey books for the plot/story, but curious that it was all from the perspective of one of the "innocent bystanders" and no chracter development at all for Det Hen Mallin, unlike his Det Diamond books which are all about his broodiness and less about the story/murders."

" Lovesey is always a good read, and frequently great. This one, an account of friends who playfully discuss murders and then find they've happened, is just good. "

" This is the second of Lovesey's book to feature Inspecter Hen Mallin, and I wish he had written more of them. ("The Circle" is the other one.) Both novels follow a similar format in that there are two narratives, one about an ordinary citizen trying to solve a crime and the other about Inspecter Mallin, who is also trying to solve the same crime. This book is a lot of fun, but is hampered by the fact that the protagonist in the not-Mallin thread is not particularly likable. Her motivations are also fairly unclear, so I spent a large part of the novel wondering why the heck she was doing what she was doing. But, this is still a very enjoyable read and the character of Hen Mallin is very engaging. "

" I gave this five stars because it was such an excellently executed mystery. I have a knack for figuring these out and although I suspected who the murderer was at the end, I couldn't figure out why until details were revealed at the very end. i am going to read more of his mysteries, for sure! " I do like Hen Mallin, at least in theory since I would not tolerate much of her behavior in person. Once again Lovesey offers as dual perspective from the official investigatory side and from the participating public's side. "

" With ample space given to product placement the author must be gunning for a film offer. This is a cat and mouse affair and the cat keeps changing as many principal actors are on the dangerous side. Rather tidy for my taste. Margot -- do you like this author? "

" I keep trying Lovesey books, because so many people seem to love him. This was a good story with good writing, but somehow, not very satisfying as a story or a mystery. I guess I've been schooled too much in the noir part of crime writing or mystery stories. "
