When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom. The Elephant Whisperer is a heartwarming, exciting, funny, and sometimes sad account of Anthony's experiences with these huge yet sympathetic creatures. Set against the background of life on an African game reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, it is a delightful book that will appeal to animal lovers and adventurous souls everywhere.

"Despite the trite and irrelevant title, this is a good book! If you like animals you will appreciate the efforts made by the author to try and successfully take in a rescue herd of "trouble maker" elephants. Those of us in animal rescue who have ever had a "problem" foster dog or cat know all too well the challenges that can be faced. Imagine those challenges when the animals are elephants! How the author, who owns a game preserve in South Africa, deals with the problems - not just of the elephants but of poaching, tribal disputes, and other struggles - is interesting. I admit I am predisposed to like stories of both Africa and animals, but I venture to bet that even if you are not, you will be able to appreciate this reasonably well told, unique story. Wish the Kindle addition had included some photos; don't know if other versions do or not."

— sue, 2/6/2014" This is a fairly enjoyable book by a ranger in a South African wildlife preserve who makes a personal connection with a herd of wild elephants. He is charged with maintaining a wildlife preserve, not a tamed life preserve, so he really wants to be in contact with the animals as little as possible. However, a herd of elephants has to be relocated to his preserve and they are not very happy with being there and immediately start escaping. That will not do. It is most likely to get them shot. Have you ever tried to control a herd of wild elephants though? About the only thing he can do is to teach the elephants to trust him so that he can convince them to stay put. That leads him to actually make frends with them. And that, of course, leads him to some emotional trauma when he has to have one of them killed and it also ends up consuming his life too. "
