"Jeannie Lin keeps the reader engrossed in this story from the beginning to the last page. I read it in two days, staying up until midnight to finish it. I first met Li Tao in Butterfly Swords, so was thrilled he was the hero of this book. And what a hero he is. Ling Suyin, the heroine, is spunky, independent, and demure--a perfect yin to Li Tao's yang. I'd recently tried to get into a Tang dynasty mainstream novel and was bored silly even by page 140, so couldn't finish it. But Jeannie Lin never gives the reader a chance to be bored. There's tension, spice, and twists and turns galore. I've enjoyed her first two novels and can't wait for the third."

“Drawing on a lushly depicted, exotic backdrop, Lin creates an intriguing romance between well-drawn characters whose secrets lure readers deep into the story. Lin has found a marvelous niche to delve into fascinating cultural elements and sensuality.”
— RT Book Reviews“Beautifully written, deliciously sensual, and rich with Tang Dynasty historical and political detail...Exceptional.”
— Library Journal (starred review)" I like the two main characters, but the pacing is a mess. "
— Mely, 2/9/2014" My God, I loved this book! It's my first Jeannie Lin novel, and I was blown away by her skill and level of craft. A beautifully written story with deep, heart-wrenching emotion. And I was riveted by the setting and the history, and how Lin made it such an integral part of the story. The Dragon and the Pearl was the opposite of a wallpaper historical - can't wait to read the rest of her books! "
— Vanessa, 1/13/2014" While Jeannie Lin's "Butterfly Swords" still has my vote for the best Tang series book, "The Dragon and the Pearl" is still a great read. "
— Rebecca, 12/12/2013" I loved that this is NOT set in historical England, but in historical China. Realistic political and personal struggles "
— Kathyred, 9/28/2013" Very enjoyable and compelling story of the Tang Dynasty Era in China. Jeannie Lin is adept at writing subtle nuances in body language that draw out the inner conflict in the character. The history and the people of that time come to life. I look forward to reading more from her. "
— Kathryn, 9/4/2013" Review coming. More like 4.5 but said five because I loved this book. Was emotionally connected from the first page and the writing was executed beautifully. The style was lyrical and although a different genre reminded me of Zoe Archer. I liked this much better than her first book. "
— Lynette, 8/3/2013" very sweet book "
