Publisher Description

The Dead Don't Dance is a bittersweet yet triumphant love story—a tale of one man's journey through the darkness of despair and into the light of hope.

In a sleepy rural town in South Carolina, Dylan and Maggie Styles are a young couple in love, preparing eagerly for the birth of their first son. But events take a tragic turn in the delivery room, and their child is delivered stillborn. When Maggie hemorrhages and slips into a coma, Dylan slips into what can only be described as a walking coma, holding vigil at his beloved wife’s bedside.

Usually tough and self-reliant, an outdoorsman and a farmer, Dylan finds that everything he has known is suddenly thrown into doubt. Refusing to give up on Maggie’s recovery, a devastated Dylan takes a job as an English professor in order to pay for Maggie’s medical bills. Dylan connects with his students despite himself and offers hope to others amid his own disappointment and grief. As Dylan waits for some change in Maggie's condition, he reflects on his life and hers.

Through friends and grace-filled moments of insight, Dylan slowly begins to heal, but it will take a second tragedy—and an anxious period of wrestling with God—to truly awaken him from his stupor and open him up to a new life.

"This book surprised me. One, the plot was very interesting but so was the main character. Two, it was very well written. It had me at the first page and I kept turning to see what would happen. Third, did NOT see the ending at all. Some people might be surprised by that, but I was so glad that I was totally wrong! I hate predictability in a book. I am surprised that I was taken away, which was also very nice. Some people might think the whole book was pretty simple, but sometimes, that's what it makes them so great!"

" The book overall was good. It hit a little close to home for me, but wasn't too emotional, which was good. I don't like this style of book. Its very disconnected. You're reading the story and then all of a sudden the "talker" goes back in the past for an entire chapter explaining how he met and became friends with the person. Its just not my favorite way of writing... I wonder if its all first person. I probably won't be reading more from Charles Martin any time soon. "

" This book was amazing. Sad but beautiful. Discuss's how a man deals with his wonder christian wife being in a coma. He looses his faith for a little bit but regains it by doing some amazing things. At the end (view spoiler)[his wife comes out of a coma (hide spoiler)] Just comes to show miracles do happen. "

" Just okay. Loaned to me by a friend; not something I would have read on my own. Too predictable, and found the writing style awkward in areas. Also, Christian fiction not my favorite. "

" I have loved all the Charles Martin books I have read, and I am anxious to start Thunder and Rain. I read The Dead Don't Dance this week and I must say, I have enjoyed his later books better. As usual there is a very sad story but there are a lot of heartwarming scenes. Overall a good read. "

" My first book by this author. It is fiction by a Christian author, but I don't know that I would categorize it as Christian fiction - it is not overwhelming or "sappy" in its message, but has some good nuggets of truth about God's sovereignty in tragic events. Good story, well written, I enjoyed it. "
