The Dead Don't Dance is a bittersweet yet triumphant love story—a tale of one man's journey through the darkness of despair and into the light of hope.
In a sleepy rural town in South Carolina, Dylan and Maggie Styles are a young couple in love, preparing eagerly for the birth of their first son. But events take a tragic turn in the delivery room, and their child is delivered stillborn. When Maggie hemorrhages and slips into a coma, Dylan slips into what can only be described as a walking coma, holding vigil at his beloved wife’s bedside.
Usually tough and self-reliant, an outdoorsman and a farmer, Dylan finds that everything he has known is suddenly thrown into doubt. Refusing to give up on Maggie’s recovery, a devastated Dylan takes a job as an English professor in order to pay for Maggie’s medical bills. Dylan connects with his students despite himself and offers hope to others amid his own disappointment and grief. As Dylan waits for some change in Maggie's condition, he reflects on his life and hers.
Through friends and grace-filled moments of insight, Dylan slowly begins to heal, but it will take a second tragedy—and an anxious period of wrestling with God—to truly awaken him from his stupor and open him up to a new life.

"This book surprised me. One, the plot was very interesting but so was the main character. Two, it was very well written. It had me at the first page and I kept turning to see what would happen. Third, did NOT see the ending at all. Some people might be surprised by that, but I was so glad that I was totally wrong! I hate predictability in a book. I am surprised that I was taken away, which was also very nice. Some people might think the whole book was pretty simple, but sometimes, that's what it makes them so great!"

" The book overall was good. It hit a little close to home for me, but wasn't too emotional, which was good. I don't like this style of book. Its very disconnected. You're reading the story and then all of a sudden the "talker" goes back in the past for an entire chapter explaining how he met and became friends with the person. Its just not my favorite way of writing... I wonder if its all first person. I probably won't be reading more from Charles Martin any time soon. "
— Stacia, 2/19/2014" This book was amazing. Sad but beautiful. Discuss's how a man deals with his wonder christian wife being in a coma. He looses his faith for a little bit but regains it by doing some amazing things. At the end (view spoiler)[his wife comes out of a coma (hide spoiler)] Just comes to show miracles do happen. "
— Amanda, 2/15/2014" Just okay. Loaned to me by a friend; not something I would have read on my own. Too predictable, and found the writing style awkward in areas. Also, Christian fiction not my favorite. "
— Tamlyn, 2/14/2014" Loved it, was on the edge of my seat. "
— Sarah, 2/13/2014" My favorite Charles Martin book! The characters are easy to relate to and I just fell in love with them. I was sad when the book was over because I felt like I was losing a wonderful group of friends. "
— Brett, 2/6/2014" I thought this book started off slow, but at about pg 200, it took off and really captured me. Charles Martin writes so beautifully and honestly, it's hard NOT to enjoy his stories. "
— Jackie, 1/25/2014" The writing is beautiful and the journey of the character was wonderful. I wish I had chosen a different time to read this book as three of my friends are pregnant and the plot is based on two scary deliveries. "
— Karen, 1/20/2014" I have loved all the Charles Martin books I have read, and I am anxious to start Thunder and Rain. I read The Dead Don't Dance this week and I must say, I have enjoyed his later books better. As usual there is a very sad story but there are a lot of heartwarming scenes. Overall a good read. "
— Jane, 1/17/2014" excellent--God meets all "
— Valerie, 12/13/2013" Again, a great read! "
— Margie, 11/6/2013" My first book by this author. It is fiction by a Christian author, but I don't know that I would categorize it as Christian fiction - it is not overwhelming or "sappy" in its message, but has some good nuggets of truth about God's sovereignty in tragic events. Good story, well written, I enjoyed it. "
— Mary, 10/22/2013" It was similar to his other books a nice uplifting book but it had some slow parts "
— Sara, 10/22/2013" One day, when I have the proper time to dedicate, I will write a review for this book. One which will, hopefully, do this work of art some small justice. "
— Rachel, 9/15/2013" Really great story of love, loss, life. Very well written & wonderfully moving book. "
— Lyn, 9/11/2013" Very sad...............not much else to say. Hope to never go through anything like that. "
— Stephen, 8/28/2013" Really good book! Kind of a slow start but can't but it down after a while, you have to finish it so you can read Maggie (the sequel), its much better! "
— Michelle, 4/30/2013" Good book. Very quick and interesting read. "

— Julie, 11/28/2012" Not my favorite....but didn't have to think too much on this book. "
— Stacie, 11/11/2012" I would give this book 3 1/2 stars. Overall it was a good book, but there were a few parts that seemed to ramble that I ended up just skimming through...otherwise I would have given it a solid 4. "
— Janeene, 10/17/2012" My favorite Charles Martin book. "

— Cheri, 2/16/2012" One of the best books I have read recently. I read this is one sitting... which is pretty rare for me. I can't wait to read more by this author. "
— Kathi, 12/27/2011" I really enjoyed this one. "
— Susan, 12/19/2011" I really enjoyed this book and now am reading the sequel, Maggie. It's nice, once in a while, to read something not violent. "
— Cathy, 11/23/2011" I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down. Looking forward to getting the next one. "
— Shelley, 11/16/2011" Not as Good as Chasing Fireflies, but considering it was his debut novel, it's not bad. A little too mushy/romantic for my liking - but I loved the character development of the students and the main character. "
— Heidi, 10/3/2011" I thought this book was good but a little predictable, and a little odd in spots. A dog in a hospital, and spelling trees and flowers in the hospital from outside? Just a few off things that created pet peeves for me, but overall the story was engrossing and Maggie a character I rooted for. "
— Joanne, 9/12/2011" Enjoyed the story. It's refreshing to read about characters of faith and integrity. "
— Catherine, 7/19/2011" This author never ceases to amaze me. What a voice! "
— Linda, 6/16/2011" It was kind of a challenging read for me. Seemed like it took me forever. I would say the last third or so is definately the best part of the book. I don't read a lot of books from a male perpective, it was different from some of the things I usually read. "
— Amy, 6/1/2011" Not as good as When Crickets Cry or Chasing Fireflies, in my opinion, but still a good story. I liked the sequel, Maggie, more! "
— Marlo, 5/24/2011" I liked this one even more than the first of his books that I read. It was a quick read that keeps your attention. "

— Barb, 4/11/2011" Very sad...............not much else to say. Hope to never go through anything like that. "

— Jennifer, 2/21/2011" not particularly exciting. this would be a great beach book "
— Jo, 2/4/2011" Not many books ellicit my emotions, but this one did. I enjoyed it more than expected. Highly recommended; nice clean read for those looking for that qualification. "
— Amy, 2/3/2011" Good story - sad and yet hopeful "
— Lisa, 1/22/2011" Pretty good for his first book, but have already read his most recent book, he has really come a long way. Keep writing, Charles! "
— Andrea, 12/7/2010" This was a well written novel. It is a very sad subject, so be prepared to cry. I liked the progression the main character makes. "
— Amy, 11/13/2010" Really great story of love, loss, life. Very well written & wonderfully moving book. "
