Publisher Description

Special Agent Smoky Barrett has been to hell and back - her husband and child were murdered years ago - and now a serial killer who calls himself The Preacher wants to teach her a lesson about divinity.

A high-profile politician's daughter is killed mid-flight on her way to Washington, DC, and the only clue is a silver cross that has been left in her side. Smoky and her team of agents begin a chase that leads them across the country and into the twisted mind of one of the most prolific serial killers ever seen.

This time he's put his crimes on display for everyone to see - he's asking to be caught, but only by someone clever enough to catch all of his clues. And for Smoky, the clock is ticking.

"There are horrible, disturbing things in this book. It is not a book for the faint-hearted. I loved it. And, as usual, McFadyen is a writer's writer - he uses language so gorgeously. A beautiful, horrific, heart-breaking book that I only rated down to four stars because I didn't like the plot *as much* as I did his previous book - and I'm pretty sure he's incorrect about how strictly priests keep criminal confessions."

" The protagonist has had a tragic life, and, as an FBI agent, she continues to see the very worst side of humanity. The novel, however, is not bleak. There are moments of laughter and sentiment. Why, there is even a vein of moral argument at the heart of the book. "

" I absolutely liked this book! But... I've read the first 2 parts of the Smoky Barrett-series just last week. Maybe that's why it all seemed a bit too much to me. That's why I gave the book 3 stars, though that may not be quite fair. I'm going to wait a while before I read the 4th book! :) "
