Once, Special Agent Smoky Barrett hunted serial killers for the FBI. She was one of the best—until a madman terrorized her family, killed her husband and daughter, and left her face scarred and her soul brutalized. Turning the tables on the killer, Smoky shot him dead—but her life was shattered forever. Now Smoky dreams about picking up her weapon again. She dreams about placing the cold steel between her lips and pulling the trigger one last time. Because for a woman who’s lost everything, what is there left to lose? She’s about to find out. In all her years at the Bureau, Smoky has never encountered anyone like him—a new and fascinating kind of monster, a twisted genius who defies profilers’ attempts to understand him. And he’s issued Smoky a direct challenge, coaxing her back from the brink with the only thing that could convince her to live. The killer videotaped his latest crime—an act of horror that left a child motherless—then sent a message addressed to Agent Smoky Barrett. The message is enough to shock Smoky back to work, back to her FBI team. And that child awakens something in Smoky she thought was gone forever. Suddenly the stakes are raised. The game has changed. For as this deranged monster embarks on an unspeakable spree of perversion and murder, Smoky is coming alive again–and she’s about to face her greatest fears as a cop, a woman, a mother . . . and a merciless killer’s next victim.

"I really liked this book. Very gritty, very descriptive, very fast-paced. If you have trouble with violence, or the vivid description there of, this is not a book for you. But if love mystery, cop-detective series, or a real page-turner, this will be up your alley. I couldn't wait to read this book at night after my daughter went to sleep. Much better than any shows that are on tv right now. I had another book I was going to read, but I think I will go ahead and read the next in series of this one. I heard its even better than this one. Perfect."

" This book was so scary, I had to put it down at times. The evilness of the villian gave me the willies. The lead character was flawed but strong and female! Liked this book a lot, even though it scared me! "
— Deb, 2/6/2014" so far I am loving this writer. "
— Terrie, 1/31/2014" A lot of emotions "

— TeriC, 12/29/2013" This book was a shocker. It's the author's first novel and it was so good, very scary. Two thumbs up. "
— Nicole, 12/28/2013" amazingly good "
— Timmermans, 12/26/2013" This book was amazing. For the first time in a really long time, I was completey broad-sided by the outcome, and loved every second of the suspense. What you don't see coming will blow you away! My chair still has finger marks indented from reading this "
— Amber, 12/20/2013" It is a thriller and makes you wonder what kind of author can get into the mind of a serial killer. I do recommend it but fair warning it talks of Rape and murder but also a Kick A$$ female FBI agent. I will continue to read this series. "
— Lindsey, 11/14/2013" Excellent book, what else to say. "
— Marija, 11/13/2013" Okay so I love this book, could be b/c the main character and I are abt the same height (unforunately, I'm shorter), but I think this book is quite intense and was unable to put it down. Highly recommend this book, however not for the faint of heart, as very descriptive in the murder scenes. "
— Angela, 11/11/2013" An absolutely amazing debut. I couldn't put it down. I've receommended "Shadow Man" to every one I know who loves a good read. And I've made sure they're aware when a new Cody McFadyen book is on the horizon. "
— Becky, 10/27/2013" Best book I've read in a long time. Unspeakably grisly, horrible, nightmarish and brilliant! Mcfayden is now on my favorite authors list and I have to get the next Smoky Barrett book! Now I just hope I can sleep tonight! "
— Troi, 10/9/2013" Read my thoughts at: Thoughts of Joy... "
— Joy, 9/5/2013" A lot of violence but will keep you on the edge of your seat. Would not recommend this book for everyone. "
— Jean, 5/9/2013" This was a gripping thriller which provided great insight into both the criminal mind and the ways the agents gather clues both physical and emotional. I also liked learning about interrogation tricks. I look forward to reading the sequel, The Face of Death. "
— krin, 9/16/2012" This is the first book....sooo good "
— Dani, 8/30/2012" I (still) wish we could do half stars. Good plotting and well written for the genre. But, because of the genre I can't go to 4 stars. It was a little too movie-ish for 4-stars. But an excellent debut novel. "
— Cindi, 3/30/2012" Thrilling, clearly expressing the minds of serial killers and showing the most of their brutality, showing how much of monsters they are. Really an amazing read. "
— Natalia, 12/27/2011" on CD - scary and brutal. disturbing and I'm not easily disturbed "
— Coki, 10/13/2011" Pretty good book, I guess right on the murderer :) "

— Nancy, 6/27/2011" wow and wow! i felt like i was actually in this book. it was fantastic and i can't wait to get the second one. "
— Kelly, 5/13/2011" Fast paced story of a serial killer. The killer's identity is pretty obvious. The interaction of the characters and
their stories are what made this novel interesting for me.
"
— Paul, 4/30/2011" Holy heck! This was an incredible page turner for me. From the 1st chapter I was sucked in!

A bit gory but a great mystery and I did not see the twist coming at all. I love the way this author writes as Smoky. And hey - what a great name for a female detective. "
— Jody, 4/26/2011" Got half way through this one and gave up. I had read Abandoned first and the events in Shadow Man are summarized, but not given away in this one. Sort of going back in time and filling in some of the gaps that I missed, but not enough to really keep me going. Too bad, Abandoned was a good one. "
— Scott, 4/19/2011" The first in this wonderful series, I couldn't put it down! "
— Elayne, 4/2/2011" Thoroughly enjoyed it - was up way too late as the team worked hard to solve the crimes! "
— Jessica, 3/26/2011" Scared the heck out of me. Keep thinking I was hearing things in the house. Smokey is a great character. "
— Kellyf, 2/12/2011" Mhm... Well, I read Cupido before and there are so many parallels. It almost feels like a Copycat. This one is a bit more brutal I think but I still like Cupido better, more thrilling, better written somehow. "
— sascha, 1/26/2011" really enjoyed this book it kept me engrossed the whole time gotta love when you get lost in a great book "
— Belinda, 1/23/2011" Zie review The Face Of Death. "
— Eva, 1/4/2011"

very good......
Gene.....

"
