Publisher Description

Protected by the dark of night, Jaimie Piper runs. But is anywhere safe when Evil is hunting you?   She’s just a twelve year-old girl, bumped around between foster homes and relegated to school classes for challenged kids, those lagging in their test scores or with behavioral issues. But her real problem is that she can sense something the other kids can’t—something dark. Something compelling her to run for her life.   All Crockett Grey wants is to mark the anniversary of his daughter’s death alone.   But when his student Jaimie comes to him, terrified, her need for protection collides with his grief, and a tangled web of bizarre events sends them both spiraling toward destruction.   Crockett’s one hope of getting his life back is to uncover the mysterious secrets of Jaimie’s past and her strange gift. It isn’t long before his discoveries lead him to a darker conspiracy, secrets guarded by the highest seat of power in the world—the Vatican.

" I had a love-hate relationship with this book. I really enjoyed the 1st half of the book, the second half not so much. I kept getting confused and the political plots left me lost as time went on. I gave this book 3 stars only because I did get absorbed in the beginning. It's too bad the second half lost the emotional connection that I had with the characters because when that happened, the book just went BLAH. "

" The Canary List was the first novel I'd read by Sigmund Brouwer. Apparently he is a well known author of Christian speculative fiction, but this novel didn't strike me as any more Christian than Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. This Vatican politics thriller is definitely not preachy. The two main characters are an atheist and a 12 year-old girl who was no clear religious faith, only a belief in Evil and that it stalks her. I give it a 3.5 mostly because such thrillers aren't my favorite kind of story, but Dan Brown fans would probably enjoy it even more. Highly recommended for those who like to explore the idea that demons might be real, without being told what to believe. "

" Biggest disappointment to me since Frank Peretti's book House. I guess I liked it enough to finish it...but hind sight being 20/20, if I could go back, I'd skip it. Just not my cup of tea. "
