Popular author Lawrence Block creates the wild and wonderful world of Bernie Rhodenbarr: fine, upstanding citizen by day, and crafty burglar by night. In this hilarious whodunit, Bernie does a favor for his dentist, only to discover mixing his personal and professional lives can be hazardous to his well-being. As Bernie squirms in the dental chair, Dr. Sheldrake presents a business proposition. He wants Bernie to rob his estranged wife's apartment while she's out enjoying the New York City nightlife. Bernie would get her fabulous collection of jewels, and Dr. Sheldrake would only take 20% of the profits. The plan sounds foolproof, so why has Bernie found himself locked in Mrs. Sheldrake's closet? Winner of three Edgar and four Shamus Awards, Lawrence Block creates plots that twist around every corner and packs them with fun-loving characters. You'll want the quirky Bernie and his companions for your very own friends, as gravelly-voiced narrator Richard Ferrone brings them vividly to life.

"I stumbled across this series. Bernie is funny and clever. I enjoy them so much. Even better, I have been unable to predict the ending in both books so far. Light, easy reading. Only 150-200 pages so easy to toss off in an evening or long afternoon. Worth a look--a nice change from a chick lit book."

" Dated, but enjoyable. Like I said, it's like a Monk marathon. Lighthearted murder. With character. "
— Alex, 2/14/2014" It's a formulaic mystery novel, but a very entertaining one. Block has a way with the dark humor. "
— Dave, 2/8/2014" An enjoyable read - especially being from the main character's viewpoint "
— Lana, 2/2/2014" I mildly fun and funny book and great for a plane ride where you do not need to pay too much attention to the plot. "
— Linda, 1/14/2014" Some clever plotting, likeable characters and some interesting attention to detail, but overall this doesn't charm me enough to want to read any more of Block's books. Block is a competent writer and it is an easy read, but nothing really makes the characters or dialogue feel worth the effort. I may give him another chance as I hear another series he wrote has more depth. "
— David, 1/12/2014" Bernie is in the wrong place again! "
— Joyce, 1/4/2014" Who doesn't love a little Bernie Rhodenbarr? I know I can read & re-read these books...never a dull moment for our friendly burgler. "
— Lisa, 12/18/2013" Imagine that - the lovable main character, Bernie, is a criminal! This is the first Lawrence Block book I've read; how cleverly he makes us love a burglar! A funny, light mystery that even a non-mystery-reader such as myself enjoyed. "
— Terry, 11/20/2013" Fun and took about 5 hours to read. Ok actually this one was way better than the first one, but it's not like I'm some mystery guru or anything. "
— brain, 11/20/2013" They made a pretty bad movie (Burglar, with Whoopie Goldberg) that was only slightly related to this book. The book itself is great, and will make anyone who likes mysteries want to read the other Bernie Rhodenbarr books. "
— Steve, 11/8/2013" all his Bernie Rhodenbarr, the burglar mysteries "
— Earl, 7/21/2013" Block's characters are fascinating and eccentric. There is a sameness to all his books as there is with many mystery writers who return over and over to familiar comfortable themes. They are still a pleasure to read. "
— Ronald, 4/30/2013" Listened to this on audio and was amused. Can't decide if I want to do more of them. Perhaps I will. A thief as a detective has a definite advantage in solving crimes. He just breaks in and looks for clues. "
— Margaret, 3/12/2013" Book was ok. Didn't especially care for the protagonist. "
— Jean, 10/1/2012" 1978 - Bernie Rhodenbarr #2. "
— Michel, 1/29/2012" Yet another series that I have completely read, waiting eagerly for each new addition. Luckily Lawrence Block is as prolific a writer as I am an avid reader fo his books. He is an american treasure--read him. "
— Marni, 12/24/2011" Fun author to read - also has darker stuff... I've read them all and enjoyed them "
— Martha, 10/2/2011" Hilarious, tongue-in-cheek. Good break from my usual genre. Gotta intersperse my reads with more from Block! "
— Jagadish, 7/12/2011" Block is a master at writing an entertaining read, regardless of which recurring character he's writing about. "
— Glenn, 6/24/2011" I read this so long ago and started writing a script from it. Apparently I wasn't the only writer who thought it would make a great movie. It was the basis for the movie Burglar starring Whoopie Goldberg. "
— Doree, 3/19/2011" Love these mysteries! Another good one! "
— Sandi, 2/13/2011" Any Lawrence Block book in the Bernie the Burglar series is great fun. It almost makes you want to be a cat burglar. "
— Kim, 9/27/2010" Book was ok. Didn't especially care for the protagonist. "
— Jean, 9/4/2010" that was an adventurous reading .....What I like the most about crime novels is this crazy, fast drive they put you in. This book was no exception.
I read this one, borrowed from a friend, in Cambridge UK "
— Rita, 3/20/2010" Block is a master at writing an entertaining read, regardless of which recurring character he's writing about. "
— Glenn, 11/30/2009" An enjoyable read - especially being from the main character's viewpoint "
— Lana, 9/13/2009" Listened to this on audio and was amused. Can't decide if I want to do more of them. Perhaps I will. A thief as a detective has a definite advantage in solving crimes. He just breaks in and looks for clues. "
— Margaret, 9/11/2009" Very Good; Continuing character: Bernie Rhodenbarr; burglar makes deal to steal dentist's ex-wife's jewels then must prove he didn't kill her.
"

— Greg, 4/16/2009" They made a pretty bad movie (Burglar, with Whoopie Goldberg) that was only slightly related to this book. The book itself is great, and will make anyone who likes mysteries want to read the other Bernie Rhodenbarr books. "
