In another enthralling bestseller by "master yarn spinner" John Dunning, rare book dealer and relentless private eye Cliff Janeway unravels a deadly plot marked by stolen classics and stable secrets. When wealthy horse trainer H. R. Geiger dies, Denver bookman Cliff Janeway encounters the legacy of the man's wife, Candice, a true bookwoman who left behind an assortment of rare first-edition children's books. Sent to assess the collection, Janeway soon finds that several titles are missing, replaced by cheap reprints -- while other hugely expensive pieces remain. Why would a thief take one priceless book and leave an equally valuable volume on the shelf? Suspecting foul play, Janeway follows the trail of Candice's shadowy past to California's Golden Gate and Santa Anita racetracks, where he signs on as a racehorse hot walker. Eavesdropping on the chatter among the hands, he doesn't like what he hears. And when he goes to the house where Candice died to look for answers, Janeway finds much more than he bargained for.

"I actually listened to the book on CD. It was interesting but a little long. I could have read it faster than the narrator was going and so I got bored in the middle. It would have been good on a long trip, but the few miles I go back and forth daily made it go on forever. The reader, George Goodwin was especially easy to listen to and has a great voice. I don't think the ending fit exactly either because there was so little about the antagonist at the beginning of the book. He wasn't a major player until the very end. So that made it a surprise ending, and I like to be able to guess the ending, even if I'm wrong."

" This is the fifth of the Bookman Series”. I’d long owned #1 Booked to Die and #4 Sign of the book and had read #1 & #4 a while back. Luckily found #2, (Bookman’s Wake,) and #3 Bookman’s Promise-abridged @ Audio Book Store and wasn’t aware of the “The Bookwoman’s Last Fling” as the last one! (If I was, I’d lost track of it.) So it is GOOD the get this book and own the entire series! It has been an interesting few days to “binge listen” to them all in order! I liked this “last” of Cliff Janeway but I think if I’d not listened to the other four it would have been less “rich” an experience "
— Quillee, 2/28/2021" Always fun to read, Dunning's mystery doesn't hold together in the end, but was enjoyable for the characters and the colorful race-track descriptions. "
— Kj, 2/13/2014" These are diversionary summer reads. I like them because much of the action takes place in Denver and I am familiar with places mentioned in the story. Little above average detective story except the Clifford Janeway is a former detective turned bookseller and collector. These are diversionary summer reads. — Vicki, 1/27/2014" A knowledgeable and satisfying read. "
— Karlene, 1/24/2014" I enjoyed the book, but it kind of meandered about. "
— Khosch, 1/16/2014" This was very satisfying. There are a few holes in the plot, but I like the Cliff Janeway character so much that I forgive them. The book connection is fun, of course, but I also enjoyed the parts in the horse racing community. Dunning obviously knows that world and the little bits of information felt real. He included some strong women characters as well. I particularly liked a scene in which Janeway's wife knocked down the guy who was going to shoot him. "
— Barbara, 1/11/2014" this was a pretty good janeway book. "
— Amanda, 12/30/2013" Sorry to see this was the last one : ( "
— Suzi, 12/20/2013" Too much horse racing, not enough books. "
— Cindy, 11/24/2013" This is a great series, but the books appeared at various lengths of time. "
— Susan, 11/9/2013" 30.1B Fling / throw / toss in title "
— pjreads, 4/5/2013" Dense reading for a potboiler of a mystery story set in the horseracing/bibiliophile world. Lost track of the number of times The Black Stallion was mentioned. Twisty generational family intrigue mixed with lots of small potatoes minor characters. Plotwise, more satisfying than his previous titles. "
— Joanna, 4/3/2013" I love the Janeway mystery series set in the book-collector world. "
— Lost, 5/19/2012" I think that John Dunning is channeling Dick Francis. "
— Robin, 1/18/2012" Love all of his books, because I love books "
— Dianne, 12/18/2011" Having read several of the Cliff Janeway mysteries, I consider this to be one of the best. Hard to put down! "
— Judy, 8/5/2011" I think I have read all of Dunning's books now. I picked this up at the library 7/09 and realized that I had already read it. Good mysteries with Janeway a retired detective who is a bookseller now. "
— Steve, 7/27/2011" Cliff gets involvede with the horse world when he is asked to investigae a 20-year-old deal of Carmen, a book collector of Children's books. Cliff's friend and librarian at a private children's library, turns out to be a little crazy. "
— Kari, 7/6/2011" It has been a while since I've read John Dunning. Great entry into this series and I'm glad I refound him. "
— Kim, 6/21/2011" The other Janeway books are much more enjoyable...it seems like he wrote this one to get away from the book collecting into a more traditional cops and robbers storyteller. It's not a bad thing, but the collecting was a great hook. "
— Jen, 1/23/2011" Cliff Janeway (the former Denver cop turned rare book dealer/sleuth) is my "Perfect" man. I live for the next Janeway mystery. "
— Missy, 1/13/2011" What's not to like about this??? Horses, rare books, a mystery, a good detective character--this was a great break from The Brothers Karamazov. "
— Sherelyn, 12/30/2010" Not my favorite Janeway novel, but it was entertaining enough "
— Chelsey, 12/14/2010" The Bookwoman's Last Fling by John Dunning (2006) "
— Kathleen, 8/23/2010" Combining children's literature, horses, and mystery -- a knock-out combination for me! "
— Kim, 6/27/2010" Good book thief and horse racing mystery. Easy reading and kept me interested. "
— Diane, 6/15/2010" I'll probably read more of John Dunning's books. This one wasn't flashy, but it was satisfying. "
— Donna, 5/4/2010" Love all of his books, because I love books "
— Dianne, 4/16/2010" Always fun to read, Dunning's mystery doesn't hold together in the end, but was enjoyable for the characters and the colorful race-track descriptions. "
— Kj, 4/6/2010" My first Cliff Janeway novel. It seemed to kind of plod along or maybe the setting of horse racing didn't appeal. "
— Sheila, 4/3/2010" Not one of his better mysteries. More about Horse racing than books. Enjoyed the first two Cliff Janeway books a lot more. "
