Publisher Description

Donalyn Miller is a dedicated teacher who says she has yet to meet a child she couldn't turn into a reader. In The Book Whisperer, Miller takes us inside her sixth grade classroom to reveal the secrets of her powerful but unusual instructional approach. Rejecting book reports, comprehension worksheets, and other aspects of conventional instruction, Miller embraces giving students an individual choice in what they read, combined with a program for independent reading. She also focuses on building a classroom library of high-interest books, and above all on modeling appropriate and authentic reading behaviors. Her zeal for reading is infectious and inspiring, and the results speak for themselves. No matter how far behind Miller's students may be when they start out, they end up reading an average of forty books per year, achieving high scores on standardized tests, and internalizing a love for reading that lasts long after they've left her class.

Travel alongside the author as she leads her students to discover the ample rewards of reading and literature. Brought to life with Miller's passionate voice, The Book Whisperer will help teachers support students of all levels on their path to reading success. This book also includes a dynamite list of recommended "kid lit" to help parents and teachers find the books that students really like to read.

"Okay...so I am a Home School Mom...so I often find myself looking for great books on what has worked for amazing teachers. Those teachers that think outside the box to INSPIRE kids! This book is great stuff! I have "accidentally" checked this book out twice. Both times I read the entire thing! I have a soon to be 3rd grader...and this book is based on a 6th grade class. However, this time around it has inspired me to focus on creating a love of reading at this level for my 8 year old this year! I can not wait to dive in and help her find her fave genre!"

    — Library Journal Starred Review
  • “Donalyn Miller deftly describes the inherent need children have to engage with books, intellectually and emotionally. The book is a timely and rare gift for teachers.”

    — Ellin Oliver Keene
  • “Runnette’s deep, assured voice is both informative and accessible. Huber, who narrates the bulk of the book, has a brighter tone that focuses on motivating listeners to implement the book’s suggestions. She is clear and emotive, and complements Runnett’s more professorial tone.”

" This book was so good that it makes me want to move back to Texas, with the hope of ever teaching with Donalyn Miller. Free choice reading is a critical component in developing a persons' love of reading. Doing away with assigned book units and letting kids choose what they want to read out of a specific, and possibly assigned, genre is the way to go. I found this book to be extremely inspirational. " This book makes me want to teach reading language arts! I agree with so much of what the author says about how students become readers that a part of me does wish I could have my own classroom to really grow readers on a daily basis. Instead, I will continue to do it from the library. The only thing I didn't appreciate was how underused the school library seemed to be. "
