"Sherlock Holmes, are a cluster of short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle between eighteen-ninety-two and nineteen-o-five. Set in the late ninetieth century England Mr. Holmes accompanied by his loyal partner, Doctor John Watson, tackle the most unusual cases that stroll through their joint apartment of 221b Baker Street. Dragging Watson into these adventures, (which he eventually started to appreciate and love), Holmes would use his skills of deduction, scientific theory, and near flawless memory to arrive to the final conclusion that would solve the case. Readers that are drawn to literature, which contains outstanding vocabulary, intricate detail, and a series of overlaying plots and relationships, will be duly satisfied with this book. Though the legendary writing of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is not the primary selling point. The primary points are the puzzles. The involvement. One trying their own hands at deduction, trying to solve these elusive mysteries. Sifting through facts. Rereading passages to find deeper meanings. Desperately attempting to determine the root of the problem, to identify the murderer, the thief. One toils in the wake of such a delicate tease. Then, either proving one’s truth, or uncovering the answer Conan, (through Holmes, through Watson) does so with simple brilliance. Now Watson and Holmes’ relationship is also another highlight of this book. While on their strenuous, (on the mind, and on the body) adventure cases, this brotherly bond is tested to various extremes, which displays the emotional fortitude between these men. Not know is how Holmes and Watson originally met, or how they attained such a strong friendship. But as the stories progress, the friendship grows even stronger. There are many qualities of this book that would appeal to advanced readers; versed deeply in the English language and it’s vocabulary, and people who enjoy the puzzle of the stories. For some, this book might not be appealing. It could be a step outside of their reading level. Also, the style of writing (of which it is quite slowly paced in comparison to closer to modern literature) could be unappealing due to its slow pace or some would say it is plainly boring. For some, mystery novels simply might not be their cup of tea, and should not choose to choose this book. In the entirety of itself, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes†is a bench mark for mystery-crime novels. A pioneer in the background, these stories are the original genius pieces that first spiked the now worldwide love of crime-mystery dramas. So hey there must be some value in em’ eh?"

Prebble's performance is spot on; he ably and admirably assumes the tales' many voices and dialects.
— Library Journal Audio Review" Having read The Hounds of the Baskervilles, I was excited to read these short stories (which I like) of Holmes and Watson. What surprised me most is how modern Holmes seems - his witicisms seem like a modern character. I like that he is a man who likes a variety of things in life - music, reading, and the enjoyment from food and drink. It makes me appreciate Robert Downey Jr.'s portrail of him and makes me eager to see the new BBC production that is said to be good. "
— Brandon, 2/19/2014" In "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", Sherlock and Watson are hired by the king of Bohemia to track down a wanted thief who has stolen from the king right from under his nose. I feel like this would be a better book if it were a bit easier to read. The olden time english writing style compliments the feel of the book, yet sometimes it is overwhelming. You would read a chapter and no understand a single thing you read. Aside from that, The story is intriguing and mysterious, wanting you to read on. (If you can...) The cunning yet mischievous Holmes gets himself into a bit of trouble, but as always, his incredible detective work gets him back on track. "
— Michael, 2/17/2014" Not a big fan of short stories and I found them very predictable. "
— Alex, 2/16/2014" Sherlock Holmes is one of the best book i had ever read. The excitement on how he, Sherlock Holmes, the greatest detective could even solve a case with the slightest clue. In this books there are many stories or events happening. The stories inclue the Scandal in Bohemia, The Red headed League, A Case of Identity, The Boscombe Valley Mystery, The fFive Orange Pips, The Man With the Twisted Lips, The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb, The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor, The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet, and the Adventure of the Copper Beeches. My favorite one would be the The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet because i find it the most interesting. In this story a banker was given a precious necklace in which cause a lot of money. Then he needs to secure it, one day he finds his own son holding it with 3 diamods missing. His son was thrown in jail, and he wouldn't say a word. Then this banker came to Sherlock Holmes to ask for help. Then Sherlock Holmes went to this house, he was able to solve it in a short period of time. But the Coronet is still missing. To find out where the coronet went you should try to read the book, along with the rest of the stories. "
— Sandy, 2/14/2014" Ups and downs. You just can't escape. "
— Hana, 2/11/2014" Sherlock Holmes was waaay better than everyone said! I put off reading it for years because everyone kept going on about how dry and boring it was, but I found it to be very entertaining. Possibly because I was envisioning Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law instead of the traditional tweed-clad Sherlock?! :) "
— Emily, 2/7/2014" I watched it in BBC, Found the show very interesting though they'Ve got some refinement then got the book and i Still loved it and enjoyed reading it. "
— Zen, 2/7/2014" ADORED. These stories just haven't dated. I love their concise telling and descriptions. Managed to guess a few outcomes but were baffled by others. Listened to the librivox recording and I can recommend it. (Even my non-bookish boyf loved these tales.) "
— Rhiannon, 2/7/2014" I read these a long, long time ago, as a young teenager and enjoyed them. Reading them again as an adult is, so far, just as enjoyable, if not a little more. Sherlock Holmes is one of my favorite literary characters of all time. "
— Elizabeth, 2/5/2014" So far the first 2 adventures are fun reading. "
— Lewis, 2/4/2014" Not particularly exciting as they're all short stories, but quite well written and Sherlock Holmes is always cool. "
— Brandon, 2/4/2014" Solid stories. Good mystery. Many stories are predictable. I was reasonably entertained. "
— Crystal, 2/3/2014" A classic, which I loved reading, but I can't help it, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are forever Sherlock and Holmes to me now. "
— Marina, 2/2/2014" Okay, so the only Sherlock Holmes book I had read prior to this was The Hound of the Baskervilles which I thoroughly enjoyed. And then my friends got me into the BBC TV show, Sherlock. And...thus my Sherlock obsession (or addiction) started. So obviously, after watching the first episode, I decided I should read the original stories and so I have! I enjoyed all of the stories, and the solutions always seem so simple even though the problem may seem complex. It's really quite fascinating how Sherlock Holmes can make such deductions and get so much out of so little. I would really recommend this to anyone who just loves reading or loves a good short story because that's what you get! :) "
— Brigitte, 2/1/2014" Perfect! One of my go-to favorites, read every couple of years! "
— Suzzanne, 1/30/2014" Spectacular collection of short stories. "
— Amy, 1/29/2014" My all time favorite detective and the best way to get to know him. Truly brilliant writing. "
— Sandi, 1/26/2014" There are surprises at ever turn and this book is quite the page turner. i just love the compilation of short stories that in the end paint the beautiful picture of the relationship between Holmes and Watson. I love it! "
— Marcelle, 1/25/2014" Every story was wonderful! Holmes is a genius and Dr. Watson is a great partner for him. They are all fantastic. You can read it all at once or just a few at a time. You will love them all. "
— Nicole, 1/25/2014" Great narrative and great characters. Too bad these are only short stories.. really addictive short stories! "
— Tiago, 1/25/2014" A great book! Watson relates Holmes' cases in a fascinating manner, revealing the idiosyncrasies that make up Sherlock Holmes bit by bit. It's easy to see where many popular mystery and detective stories got their influence. A great book. By the way: I listened to this as a book on tape - and I highly recommend it! Each chapter is a different story, so you can take as much time as you need between chapters and still thoroughly enjoy the tales. "
— Melissa, 1/20/2014" I love reading these stories here and there between other books. I also love how frustrating some of the endings are. "
— Maureen, 1/19/2014" The awesomest piece of detective fiction ever!!! "
— Aditya, 1/19/2014" Good stuff. Most of the stories, even if you did figure out who dunnit, had unpredictable plot twists that made the endings interesting, fresh and kind of realistic. "
— Fred, 1/17/2014" jolly good. a bit formulaic, but i can see why the world has loved sherlock holmes since sir arthur wrote these stories! "
— Caitlin, 1/16/2014" A series of short mysteries. "
— Sonya, 1/16/2014" it was an okay book. sherlock holmes is brilliant and all, very sharp, and the stories are intriguing for the most part, but the way the crimes or mysteries work makes it hard for you as a reader to be involved in solving them because most of the evidence is gleaned from observation of the clients or of the crime scene areas. mostly then that means you're just reading one story after another about a great detective who solves strange and sometimes absurd cases, which is pretty cool, but it does get repetitive after a while. it's a collection of short stories that you read one chapter or story every once in a while. if you read the stories in succession, it makes them seem dull and boring. "
— Amelia, 1/14/2014" I didn't get all of this read for my Mom's book group. We all agreed that while the stories were enjoyable they were a little predictable. I think all the mysteries on TV and in the movies have jaded us a bit. I read an annotated version and it gave me some insight to Sherlock "groupies" --- amazing. "
— Cindy, 1/12/2014" Excited that this choice is our 'One Book One City' read for Sierra Madre in 2012! "
— Catherine, 1/7/2014" I had never read Sherlock Holmes before, but had seen the movies and thought I would give it a shot. These were enjoyable and each case was short. They are all very similar in style, so if you like one, you will like the rest in the series. "
— Chris, 1/6/2014" I didn't think I would, but I throughly enjoy this book! Just because it is old doesn't mean that it isn't adventure and mystery packed. It's a classic for a reason. You should read this book! "
— Caroline, 1/5/2014" Read the first story. Not as fun as I'd hoped to follow the mystery (I just felt there was no way I could unravel it myself, so I'd just have to read and find out). And his view on mormons was kind of crazy. "
— Jamie, 1/3/2014" maybe it's because I'm obsessed with Sherlock, but I ship Sherlock/John so hard, even while reading. "
— Mayte, 12/28/2013" I've never been a great fan of detective fiction or Sherlock Holmes, but some of these stories were relatively intriguing. "
— David, 12/27/2013" I listened to these stories on my runs, and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Made me laugh out loud at times. "
— Ashley, 12/26/2013" Very clever, though a lot of the adventures required knowledge of the history of England and I found those a little more difficult to follow. But all the same, I enjoyed reading it very much. "
— Maira, 12/17/2013" LOVED LOVED LOVED!!! I love everything Sherlock. The new BBC Sherlock Holmes sparked my reading. He is so brilliant and fabulous. "
— Brittany, 12/13/2013" I recently loaded this onto my Kindle. I am thoroughly enjoying the re-read. "
— Gienkies, 12/12/2013" The game, as they say, is afoot! What can be said about these that hasn't already? The only thing missing are the wonderful Strand illustrations. I think my favorite story in this book is The Speckled Band. Very creepy. "
— Kooshmeister, 11/26/2013" I greatly enjoyed 9 of the 12 stories in this volume. I didn't dislike the other three, but thought them considerably weaker than the others. I think The Speckled Band was my favorite. "
— Joey, 11/16/2013" I loved this one even more than the Study in Scarlett! This had so many amazing stories in one book. My favourite was definitely The Adventure of the Speckled Band followed closely by The Adventure of the Copper Beeches. "
— Mohini, 11/10/2013" Fun to read and fun to compare to the current PBS series "Sherlock". Any body of work that remains popular for so many years and influences so many new works must be the work of a genius. "
— Lyle, 11/8/2013" Always love a classic and their free on my Kindle. "
— Sonya, 10/23/2013" Not a big fan of short stories and I found them very predictable. "
— Alex, 10/19/2013" These are pretty sweet. I did not realize that Holmes was such a rockstar in the books. My only beef is that after 3 to 5 tales, you start to see the formula and it starts to get a little Law and Order or more precisely, Encyclopedia Brown. Still badass and still worth the read though. "
— Matt, 10/18/2013" What don't we all love about Sherlock Holmes? "
— Veronica, 9/30/2013" I read this adapted version for children to my boys at bedtime. Sherlock Holmes really captured their attention! They liked the challenge of trying to figure out what was really going on in each of the 5 mysteries. I recommend! "
— Meghan, 9/27/2013" I don't usually like short stories but, I quite enjoyed these. I've read The Hound of the Baskervilles and other of his novels, but I think I preferred this book of short stories. "
— Luckngrace, 9/14/2013" Great listen - wonderful narration. "
— Saman, 8/30/2013" Okay, so the only Sherlock Holmes book I had read prior to this was The Hound of the Baskervilles which I thoroughly enjoyed. And then my friends got me into the BBC TV show, Sherlock. And...thus my Sherlock obsession (or addiction) started. So obviously, after watching the first episode, I decided I should read the original stories and so I have! — Zen, 8/12/2013" Mi favorito por siempre, puedo leer y re-leer las historias de Sherlock Holmes. Todos los casos son muy inesperados. "
— Azucena, 8/11/2013" These are pretty sweet. I did not realize that Holmes was such a rockstar in the books. My only beef is that after 3 to 5 tales, you start to see the formula and it starts to get a little Law and Order or more precisely, Encyclopedia Brown. Still badass and still worth the read though. "
— Matt, 8/7/2013" Just an enjoyable read. A timeless classic "
— Rob, 8/5/2013" well written, very elaborate stories and enquiries! I kept reading it for hours!!! "
— Bilel, 7/15/2013" I've only read 'The Hound of Baskervill's' and i loved it very much. I should read some more. "
— Vladimira, 7/14/2013" It's a classic for a reason. The language is a lot simpler than I was expecting, but you still need to pay attention. Each story is interesting and they're not too long. "
— Jessica, 6/24/2013" With such fun ADVENTURES and so much personality, how can you not like solving crimes with Watson and Sherlock Holmes? "

— Katherine, 5/22/2013" A classic, which I loved reading, but I can't help it, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are forever Sherlock and Holmes to me now. "
— Marina, 5/13/2013" Love the old language. Many words I had to look up in a dictionary, but I think that is part of the charm. Love that it is a collection of short stories, which makes it perfect for bedside reading for someone like me that has a difficulty in putting away good books when I start to read. "
— Cathrine, 4/9/2013" One thing I love about Sherlock Holmes is the Victorian flair it presents during its time. This coupled with my love for mystery and thrills makes this a classic well worth the read. "
— Angelo, 3/30/2013" Truly masterful. A great example of what a mystery novel should be. "
— Manda, 3/22/2013" Romp! Nice collection if shorter stories. Really enjoying Sherlock Holmes, and it is very different to the Ladybird versions I read as a child! "
— Joe, 3/21/2013" Excellent books. Loads of fun. ADVENTURE. MYSTERY. SEXUAL INNUENDO. Brilliant. "
— John, 3/9/2013" Great narrative and great characters. Too bad these are only short stories.. really addictive short stories! "
— Tiago, 2/14/2013" Good fun if slightly formulaic. The stories have more of a Gothic spookiness to them then I imagined they would, but it's the character of Holmes that gives these adventures their appeal. "
— Paul, 2/10/2013" I personally like the longer stories better, but these short stories make for a quick and very interesting read! "
— Hayden, 1/28/2013" piece by piece over the decades, i've read sherlock holmes stories. finally i have read an entire collection of them. always fun. is it really deductive reasoning as sherlock claims? or is it really inductive reasoning that he uses to come to his conclusions? "
— Maggie, 1/22/2013" I listened to the Librivox podcast of this book while at work describing corn, and really enjoyed it. My roommates and I enjoyed watching the BBC series Sherlock together, so I thought I might enjoy reading the inspiration for the show and getting to know Sherlock better. "
— Vivi, 1/13/2013" Arthur Conan Doyle described Sherlock Holmes and Watson relationship very vividly. Watson and Sherlock seems to be in a good relationship, in some ways. "
— Gene, 1/10/2013" I liked it a lot. :) "
— Ivy, 12/22/2012" I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but I really enjoyed this collection. I loved how Sherlock gathers his clues and comes to a conclusion so quickly, and it's never anything I could had guessed. A good read. "
— Becca, 11/25/2012" I have to say that I thought this was just ok. I really thought I was going to love it I would say I really loved, 5 of the stories was bored by the rest. I am glad I read it but I will never read it again. Donated the book. "

— Nur, 8/24/2012" Highly enjoyable, even if not, perhaps, as surprising as some of his other stories. "
— Alasdair, 8/21/2012" Actually the book that I read was the Gutenberg Project version which consists of 12 short stories in ebook format. The stories were entertaining, but didn't interest me enough to go and read any more Sherlock Holmes stories. "
— Joyce, 8/9/2012" Very clever, though a lot of the adventures required knowledge of the history of England and I found those a little more difficult to follow. But all the same, I enjoyed reading it very much. "
— Maira, 7/24/2012" I read these a long, long time ago, as a young teenager and enjoyed them. Reading them again as an adult is, so far, just as enjoyable, if not a little more. Sherlock Holmes is one of my favorite literary characters of all time. "

— M.L., 6/14/2011" I enjoyed the novel. I remember not really liking Sherlock Holmes when reading it in school. I thought he was a pretentious jerk, which I still think is true, but I definitely respect the quality of Doyle's writing and his ability to piece together these mysteries. "

— Jon, 10/11/2006Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was born of Irish parentage in Scotland. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, but he also had a passion for storytelling. His first book introduced that prototype of the modern detective in fiction, Sherlock Holmes. Despite the immense popularity Holmes gained throughout the world, Doyle was not overly fond of the character and preferred to write other stories. Eventually popular demand won out and he continued to satisfy readers with the adventures of the legendary sleuth.
