"Sherlock Holmes, are a cluster of short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle between eighteen-ninety-two and nineteen-o-five. Set in the late ninetieth century England Mr. Holmes accompanied by his loyal partner, Doctor John Watson, tackle the most unusual cases that stroll through their joint apartment of 221b Baker Street. Dragging Watson into these adventures, (which he eventually started to appreciate and love), Holmes would use his skills of deduction, scientific theory, and near flawless memory to arrive to the final conclusion that would solve the case. Readers that are drawn to literature, which contains outstanding vocabulary, intricate detail, and a series of overlaying plots and relationships, will be duly satisfied with this book. Though the legendary writing of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is not the primary selling point. The primary points are the puzzles. The involvement. One trying their own hands at deduction, trying to solve these elusive mysteries. Sifting through facts. Rereading passages to find deeper meanings. Desperately attempting to determine the root of the problem, to identify the murderer, the thief. One toils in the wake of such a delicate tease. Then, either proving one’s truth, or uncovering the answer Conan, (through Holmes, through Watson) does so with simple brilliance. Now Watson and Holmes’ relationship is also another highlight of this book. While on their strenuous, (on the mind, and on the body) adventure cases, this brotherly bond is tested to various extremes, which displays the emotional fortitude between these men. Not know is how Holmes and Watson originally met, or how they attained such a strong friendship. But as the stories progress, the friendship grows even stronger. There are many qualities of this book that would appeal to advanced readers; versed deeply in the English language and it’s vocabulary, and people who enjoy the puzzle of the stories. For some, this book might not be appealing. It could be a step outside of their reading level. Also, the style of writing (of which it is quite slowly paced in comparison to closer to modern literature) could be unappealing due to its slow pace or some would say it is plainly boring. For some, mystery novels simply might not be their cup of tea, and should not choose to choose this book. In the entirety of itself, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes” is a bench mark for mystery-crime novels. A pioneer in the background, these stories are the original genius pieces that first spiked the now worldwide love of crime-mystery dramas. So hey there must be some value in em’ eh?"

  • Prebble's performance is spot on; he ably and admirably assumes the tales' many voices and dialects.

" Having read The Hounds of the Baskervilles, I was excited to read these short stories (which I like) of Holmes and Watson. What surprised me most is how modern Holmes seems - his witicisms seem like a modern character. I like that he is a man who likes a variety of things in life - music, reading, and the enjoyment from food and drink. It makes me appreciate Robert Downey Jr.'s portrail of him and makes me eager to see the new BBC production that is said to be good. "

" In "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", Sherlock and Watson are hired by the king of Bohemia to track down a wanted thief who has stolen from the king right from under his nose. I feel like this would be a better book if it were a bit easier to read. The olden time english writing style compliments the feel of the book, yet sometimes it is overwhelming. You would read a chapter and no understand a single thing you read. Aside from that, The story is intriguing and mysterious, wanting you to read on. (If you can...) The cunning yet mischievous Holmes gets himself into a bit of trouble, but as always, his incredible detective work gets him back on track. "

" Sherlock Holmes is one of the best book i had ever read. The excitement on how he, Sherlock Holmes, the greatest detective could even solve a case with the slightest clue. In this books there are many stories or events happening. The stories inclue the Scandal in Bohemia, The Red headed League, A Case of Identity, The Boscombe Valley Mystery, The fFive Orange Pips, The Man With the Twisted Lips, The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb, The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor, The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet, and the Adventure of the Copper Beeches. My favorite one would be the The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet because i find it the most interesting. In this story a banker was given a precious necklace in which cause a lot of money. Then he needs to secure it, one day he finds his own son holding it with 3 diamods missing. His son was thrown in jail, and he wouldn't say a word. Then this banker came to Sherlock Holmes to ask for help. Then Sherlock Holmes went to this house, he was able to solve it in a short period of time. But the Coronet is still missing. To find out where the coronet went you should try to read the book, along with the rest of the stories. "

" Sherlock Holmes was waaay better than everyone said! I put off reading it for years because everyone kept going on about how dry and boring it was, but I found it to be very entertaining. Possibly because I was envisioning Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law instead of the traditional tweed-clad Sherlock?! :) "

About Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was born of Irish parentage in Scotland. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, but he also had a passion for storytelling. His first book introduced that prototype of the modern detective in fiction, Sherlock Holmes. Despite the immense popularity Holmes gained throughout the world, Doyle was not overly fond of the character and preferred to write other stories. Eventually popular demand won out and he continued to satisfy readers with the adventures of the legendary sleuth. He also wrote historical romances and made two essays into pseudoscientific fantasy: The Lost World and The Poison Belt.
