The year is 1909, and Temperance O'Neil is a woman ahead of her time. At 29, she is happily married to her work helping single mothers on the streets of New York. Unfortunately, Angus McCairn - her new stepfather - controls the purse strings to her substantial inheritance. Angus insists she quit her career and live in his house in Edinburgh. Temperance heads to Scotland with one mission - to drive Angus crazy. Angus asks that she pose as housekeeper to Angus' nephew, James, in a secret attempt to find him a wife. If she succeeds in matchmaking, she will be allowed to return to New York.
Although James McCairn is Laird of Clan McCairn, he's no cultured gentleman - he's a strapping, rough-mannered giant interested only in farming. His stables are immaculate, his horses gleam with care, and he lavishes personal attention on his sheep - but there are pigeons roosting in the kitchens and chickens in the bedrooms.
Temperance is determined to win her return passage at any cost. But the cost may be her heart...for as Temperance O'Neil attempts to open James' eyes to the wonders of love, it is she herself who is liberated - by the power of an overwhelming passion.

"Really enjoyed this one, but the timing is totally off on this ending. Liked it anyway. Starting out in New York and then switching to Scotland in early 1900's. Temperance is a wealthy well known New York woman's rights activist who has worked to better the lives of women in New York. Her world starts to turn upside down when her mother remarries. Her stepfather seizes control of her assets and forces her to move to Scotland where he deems he can find her a husband. Finding a husband was never her problem so she decides to turn the tables on him and makes his life as disrupted as hers. That is when the fun begins."

— Booklist" Great story about a woman' struggles in the early 1900's. "
— Rita, 2/7/2014" I really enjoyed this book. It is a book where the main character finds her true self in a small town that she does not want to be in but is happy once things start to change. She relizes she has more to officer the world if she just becomes herself and mkes changes for the better. "

— Sheryl, 1/28/2014" Anyone who knows me knows I am a sucker for a "good" romance and rotate every book I read with one. I think Jude Deveraux's are fast, easy and have the right amount of romance without adding affairs which I never want to read about. "
— Niki, 1/21/2014" I don't think I like abridged audio books. Although I followed the story line just fine and I didn't feel like I missed out on anything, I also didn't get into the book the way I usually do with the full version. "
— Maggie, 1/8/2014" Great story, really takes you there. The ending was a bit forced, but cute as usual with romance novels. "
— Sonja, 1/1/2014" I liked the story but somehow I didn't quite like the way it ends because it seemed that it was rushed. But overall, I still liked the flow of the story. :) "

— Kathleen, 10/4/2012" Temptation is another good book by Jude Deveraux. It's not fun being manipulated, but sometimes good comes out of it. "

— Stephanie, 12/28/2011" I think Jude Deveraux is a great author but, I did not like this book much. The heroine was mildly interesting, the setting used too often and the Hero was a jerk for most of the book. The ending was abrupt and hard to believe. "
— Jade, 9/16/2011" Light fun read. Loved that the lead lady wasn't some helpless heroine but a strong independent woman! "
— Sarah, 6/26/2011" I think Jude Deveraux is a great author but, I did not like this book much. The heroine was mildly interesting, the setting used too often and the Hero was a jerk for most of the book. The ending was abrupt and hard to believe. "

— Lizzy, 11/15/2010" I really liked the book, but thought 2 years at the end was a little too long. Quick love story read. "
— Lisa, 7/15/2010" A dull romance that I couldn't wait to finish so I could move on to something else. I had to force myself to get through it. "

— Stephanie, 3/16/2010" This is a typical romance novel.
GOK...why I had this on my "to read" list unless it was because the setting was Scotland.

Wouldn't recommend it...unless you are into that genre.. "
