Nee-To-Sheng of Foochow, China is known as Watchman Nee to hundreds of thousands of Christians around the world who have encountered his books. The Release of the Spirit is one of his most powerfully challenging works. Watchman Nee exhorts believers that through the breaking of the outward man there comes a release of the inward Spirit. By means of our brokenness the Spirit rejuvenates our faith and makes us fit for service. // Watchman Nee knew about suffering. In his native China he suffered as a Christian. And he witnessed the brokenness in thousands of Christians, created by unusually difficult circumstances. In the midst of such discomfort it remains a testimony to his insightfulness that he preached the spiritual value of suffering instead of dreaming for a better earthly life. The Release of the Spirit will challenge all who engage it today.

"A great explanation of spiritual authority, both directly from God and indirectly through the people He places over us. It's basically impossible not to feel convicted about something while you read Watchman Nee. He's not afraid to call you out. "

— Kim, 3/6/2008Watchman Nee (1903–1972) is remembered for his leadership of an indigenous church movement in China, as well as for his books, which continue to enrich Christians throughout the world. Beginning in the 1930s, he helped establish local churches in China that were independent of foreign missionary organizations and were used to bring many into the Kingdom of God. From these roots sprang many of the house churches that continued to meet after Western missionaries were forced to leave the country during the Cultural Revolution. Arrested in 1952 and found guilty of a large number of false charges, Nee was imprisoned until his death.
