"The ninth book in a terrific fantasy/science fiction series. It's been five years since the eighth installment, but it's well worth the wait! In this one, Nita, Kit and fellow wizards go to Mars to investigate the possible revival of past life there. I love the way the author pays tribute to previous SF writers who have speculated about Martian civilization. Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom on Mars! Well, sort of. It's great fun. If you're a newcomer to the series, don't start with this one. Go back to book one, So You Want to Be a Wizard, and read all of the previous ones first!"

" I just enjoy these books, they always have interesting stories. "
— Natalie, 2/19/2014" I didn't enjoy it nearly so much as I remember enjoying previous Young Wizards books. It was a fun read, and the setting as always is wonderful, the unique magic system and moral backdrop of the series is one of the most creative and believable I have encountered. But I found the characters flat, the dialouge simple, and the plot a bit silly. Maybe I am just growing out of the books. That said, it was a very fun read, if mostly for the setting and descriptions of magic. "
— Gerald, 2/8/2014" I like this series a lot. It's a wonderful conglomeration of genres, but crossing those boundaries means that you step out of your stereotypical story. You won't understand it if you haven't read the others, but I like that I have to draw on the other books to understand what's going on. I sure learned a lot about Mars! Diane Duane does a great job of doing her research, so I feel like I'm learning a lot about astronomy, physics, and geology as I read. "
— Jamie, 1/29/2014" I really enjoyed this latest book in the series. There were a lot of lengthy descriptions in the first half that made it a little hard to slog through, but the characters are really well developed and the story was interesting. I read this series with my 12yo, and we like being able to talk about all the books together. :-) "
— Cheri, 1/22/2014" Great series. Still exploring new ground. AND part of Mars becomes New Jersey, complete with Martian War Machines battling the Mars rover Spirit! Laughs along with serious commentary on the world, people and philosophy. Who could ask for more. "
— Eric, 1/11/2014" It tells of what lies under the surface. Of an ancient people and love also a war. "
— Eddy, 12/15/2013" Parts seemed to drag on. I found in hard to get into. "
— Marisa, 10/26/2013" This series continues its high standards! More to come. "
— Tamsyn, 5/29/2013" 4.5 stars...Back in good form w/ a good bit of humor in with the SF/Fantasy world of wizardry. "
— Bob, 11/11/2012" I really enjoyed it, but a real review will have to wait. I devoured it so quickly I'm not sure what to think. I need to go reread book 8 before the reread, as that's the only one in the series I haven't read 3 or more times, and this story really relies on some of the context of that one. "
— Becca, 10/23/2012" Once again, I am reminded of how much I love this series. Diane Duane did not disappoint in the least with the latest installment of the Young Wizard's series. "
— John, 10/3/2012" A pleasant offering in this series. A little more heavy-handed on the moral development than usual. Offers some interesting insights into Nita & Kit's developing friendship as they move into their teenage years. "
— JoyfulK, 9/7/2012" Very good book. Returned to my favorite of the human characters in the Young Wizards universe. Hoped for some cameos from the feline wizards, but ah well. Laid a lot of groundwork for future mysteries, which intrigued me. Can't wait to read more! "
— Matthew, 1/15/2012" it was okay, but it was kind of a let down after the wonderful series that it began as. "
— Michaela, 10/27/2011" I really like the So You Want to Be a Wizard series and watching the kids grow up but it may be time to bring this one to an end. However, kudos to Duane for where she takes the characters and her thoughtful comments on taking care of "life" and all that entails as she describes it. "
— Barbara, 10/16/2011" It didn't keep my attention very well; I still want to know what happened to Roshaun. "
— Jessica, 9/2/2011" 4.5 stars...Back in good form w/ a good bit of humor in with the SF/Fantasy world of wizardry. "
— Bob, 6/8/2011" Another great adventure in the Young Wizards series! Events from previous books in the series are referenced, allowing readers to see what has happened since then, and lots of characters make another appearance. Good read! "
