When he was 19, James Stark was considered to be one of the greatest natural magicians, a reputation that got him demon-snatched and sent downtown - to Hell - where he survived as a gladiator, a sideshow freak entertaining Satan's fallen angels.

That was 11 years ago. Now, the hitman who goes only by Stark has escaped and is back in L.A. Armed with a fortune-telling coin, a black bone knife, and an infernal key, Stark is determined to destroy the magic circle - led by the conniving and powerful Mason Faim - that stole his life.

Though nearly everything has changed, one constant remains: his friend Vidocq, a 200-year-old Frenchman who has been keeping vigil for the young magician's return. But when Stark's first stop saddles him with an abusive talking head that belongs to the first of the circle, a sleazy video store owner named Kasabian, Stark discovers that the road to absolution and revenge is much longer than he counted on, and both Heaven and Hell have their own ideas for his future. Listener Opinions

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Bretton | 2/18/2014

" This was my first Kindle purchase. It was a fun light read and got positive reviews from comic writers I enjoy. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Eric Jenkins | 2/15/2014

" I just finished reading this series and I enjoyed it greatly. The first book is very caught up in its cultural trappings, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I spend a big chunk of the '90s reading Re/Search books, listening to the cramps, and watching bad movies, so this book kind of took me back to some of that. Beyond all that, it's a great hard-boiled supernatural thriller. The later books of the series get even better. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Max Bolongaita | 2/7/2014

" I liked the story but it lacked a lot of character description and back story. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Jenn | 1/17/2014

" Sarcasm, Hell, a reluctant hero and magick that makes sense (at least in the context of L.A. as an entity). Did I mention the snark? I live for good snark. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Book Huntress | 1/12/2014

" really good, i will be continuing with the series... "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Steve Applegate | 1/6/2014

" Not one of my favorites. I liked the premise, but the cliche Sam Spade one liners were just too much to stand. After a few chapters, the dialog becomes quite annoying. I finished the book just to see what happened, but I won't read the next ones in the series. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Jakob | 1/3/2014

" As a fan of the tv series Supernatural this was right up my alley. A gritty and angry magician returns from hell to seek revenge. Good stuff. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Mikey | 10/27/2013

" Now this is a fun read with a lot of potential for a GREAT long term series. Stark has enough depth to turn into a great character to watch and the supporting cast lends itself to a lot of different possible side stories. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Rae | 10/27/2013

" This is exactly what I wanted right now... and the metaphors just crack me up. Lovely. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Rick Wolanski | 11/4/2012

" Fun exploitative, hyper-violent pulp. Worth the quick read. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Brandon Alexander | 4/9/2012

" Although Kadrey loads this novel with a series of in-your-face lines, the novel barely kept my attention and did not send me recommending it to anyone. "

" Quick read, but really good. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Chris | 5/19/2011

" Absolutely loved it! I read books for enjoyment and this one definitely fit the bill. I look forward to checking out the subsequent members of the series.

I can't help wondering if Richard Kadrey is a pen name for Jim Butcher. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Dabnorfish | 5/19/2011

" It's not big, and it's not clever, but it is fun. Made a nice change from some of the heavier stuff I've been reading recently. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Vincent | 5/18/2011

" interesting take on the fight between heavan and hell. the story is slow to get started, but picks up after the first third. The characters grew on you, but were still missing something to keep you engaged. Fun, but not great. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Elizabeth | 5/16/2011

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Ian | 4/30/2011

" The whole "urban fantasy" thing has become almost obnoxiously trendy of late but I have to admit this one is pretty entertaining, thanks to Kadrey's combination of hard-boiled prose and snarky black humor. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Jonathan | 4/23/2011

" A gritty atypical urban fantasy that tells an excellent story while avoiding what have become the clichéd hallmarks of the genre. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Sally | 4/23/2011
